On Friday evening, Jeopardy! announced the total donations during guest host Sanjay Gupta‘s first week that will be given to his favorite charity.

CNN’s chief medical correspondent is filling in as the current interim on Jeopardy! from June 29 to July 9. He’s the most recent temporary host following the death of Alex Trebek in November 2020. The game show has utilized a long list of celebrities ever since that includes people from all across the entertainment industry.

During each Jeopardy! guest host’s stint on the game show, they get to choose their favorite charity. The show then generously matches each contestant’s earnings and donates the total to the chosen organization. Gupta chose a charity that is near and dear to him in Atlanta where he lives and is a neurosurgeon at Grady Memorial Hospital.

Odyssey Atlanta is a childcare and educational charity based in the Atlanta area. The group helps kids in underserved areas reach their full potential in life. As of Friday, Gupta has finished up his first week as host on Jeopardy!. So far, the money raised on the show totals $94, 258. With similar numbers expected in Week 2 of his guest appearance, Gupta’s charity could end up with around a $200,000 donation.

“$94,258 raised so far for @odysseyatlanta during @drsanjaygupta’s first week on Jeopardy!,” the game show wrote on Instagram.

‘Jeopardy!’ Guest Host Sanjay Gupta Tears Up Speaking About Odyssey Atlanta

Before Sanjay Gupta‘s first Jeopardy! appearance on Monday, the game show posted an exclusive interview with the neurosurgeon. While speaking in the interview, Gupta revealed what charity he picked. While talking about the Atlanta-based charity, he couldn’t help but get emotional over it.

“The charity I chose is Odyssey Atlanta,” Gupta shared in the interview. “And I’m probably going to get a little emotional, I’ll warn you because it has been a tough year for kids through this pandemic. You know, I think a lot of kids, my kids have — they’ve done well. But I know a lot of kids haven’t been able to have the same resources. So, I thought it was a great opportunity to try and provide that for them. And the amount of money that this raised will transform some of these kids’ lives.”

“Odyssey provides a lot of educational programs,” he continued. “They do this over the summer. There were a lot of schools that simply could not be in session for a good portion of the year. For many of these kids, it was a year lost.”

“Odyssey Atlanta may, you know, help fix that for some of these kids. I don’t want to be overly euphemistic. It’s a tough problem. But this kind of money totally changes entire communities’ lives. So I’m very excited about what’s happened here and the impact that it’s gonna have,” Gupta concluded.
