With 19 wins and over $574,000 in the bank, Jeopardy! legend Matt Amodio landed himself in the record books behind Ken Jennings and James Holzhauer. As the third greatest all-time player of the trivia game show, Amodio himself is still in denial over his recent accomplishment. A lifelong fan of the show, the champ never imagined making show history, let alone appearing on the set at all.

While the shock will surely subside at some point, Amodio’s disbelief over his winnings speaks to his humility as a competitor. Like his Jeopardy! predecessors, the recent champ doesn’t lord his victory over others. Instead, he treats it as a challenge to keep learning and watching the show.

Recently, Amodio expressed his gratitude for his opportunity on the show. He also shared just how proud he was to be among the Jeopardy! greats.

“I can’t believe it. It still doesn’t make sense,” Amodio said, regarding his record-breaking win. “I expect to look at the record book and still see everybody else’s name but mine. It will never fit in for me.”

Of course, he shares this with a grin on his face. Who wouldn’t be thrilled to be surprised each time they found their name in the Jeopardy! record books?

Champ Matt Amodio Shares Advice with Fans Hoping to Compete on ‘Jeopardy!’

Despite all of his vast knowledge, Jeopardy! champ Matt Amodio admitted that a big reason why he still can’t wrap his head around his success is because of the self-doubt he once felt. Prior to coming on the show, Amodio didn’t think he was up to the challenge.

“I like Jeopardy. I’ve seen, I think, every episode in my lifetime, and nonetheless didn’t think I would be good enough to be on the show,” Amodio said.

Thanks to his dad, though, the future record-holder would take the “Anytime Test,” which determines whether a candidate qualifies for the show. Soon enough, Amodio received call after call from show producers before he finally wound up on the show’s set. Even as he competed, though, Amodio never thought he would walk away with more than a half-million dollars in the bank. Now, as a Jeopardy! icon, Amodio has a piece of advice for fellow self-doubting fans.

“I think that people out there have a ton of knowledge but probably a lot of self-doubt, too, and they’re holding themselves back. And I just have to encourage them.” Amodio stated. “Go for it. Bet on yourself. Give it a try.”

His other words of wisdom?

“Read – that’s the best advice I can give anybody. If you find it mildly interesting, read more about it. If you don’t find it mildly interesting, read more about it. You just need to know more, and then you’ll find that interesting.”
