You don’t go on a multiple-episode win streak on Jeopardy! without taking some risks. That’s exactly what contestant Matt Amodio did when he risked all of his earnings on a Daily Double on the way to his ninth straight win.
The Yale Ph.D. student who lives in New Haven, Connecticut has recently shot into the pantheon of Jeopardy! champions. The 30-year-old already broke the Top 10 in highest earnings by the game show’s contestants. After Monday night’s episode, he moved into eighth place on the all-time Jeopardy! earnings list. And he doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon.
On Tuesday night, Amodio led the other two contestants through the middle of the second round. The reigning champ had earned $13,000, but contestant Christina trailed right behind him with $10,400. Contestant Harry lagged behind the pair with only $4,800. Amodio chose the “AUSTRALIAN HISTORY” category for $1,200, and landed on the Daily Double. He made a bold move and went all in with his $13,000.
Guest host David Faber read Amodio his make-or-break clue. “Australia became its own nation January 1, 1901 as the ‘this’ of Australia, a word implying union for everyone’s good,” Faber read aloud.
Only with slight hesitation, Amodio answered with the question, “What’s… Commonwealth?”
The risk paid off in spades. If the current champion got it wrong, he would’ve lost every penny earned. Instead, he doubled his earnings to $26,000 and took a commanding lead. He never looked back on the way to his ninth straight win.
‘Jeopardy!’ Champ Matt Amodio Says He’s ‘Hungry’ to Continue Win Streak
During a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight, the current Jeopardy! champion said he’s “hungry” to continue his win streak.
With more than $300,000 in total winnings, Matt Amodio is already one of the highest-earning contestants in the game show’s history. Therefore Amodio is already in rare territory as he inches towards a double-digit win streak.
Yet he admitted he didn’t necessarily go in thinking about winning numerous episodes. Amodio assumed if he won a single episode that he’d be more than happy. However, he’s also not the type to rest on his laurels and wants to push himself to “do it again.”
“I go in on the first day, and I say, ‘I hope it goes well. But if I win a single game, I’m going to be as delighted as can be.’ And I won, but my attitude is to tend to be hungry,” Amodio explained to Entertainment Weekly recently. “And so once I won one, I wasn’t sitting on my laurels or anything. I said, ‘You know, that was good. Let’s do it again.’”
Amodio said it’s a dream come true to be a champion on the famous game show. He seems genuinely surprised about his win streak, but wants to keep the ball rolling as long as he can.
“I went into a full day of taping saying, ‘This is just the dream. I can’t believe I have the opportunity to do this.’ And to get the opportunity to come back as a returning champion was just astounding to me. Each step of the way, I was just kind of amazed that it kept going,” the Jeopardy! champion added.
