Yesterday’s (Wednesday) episode of the game show “Jeopardy!” became a real barnburner that came down to the Final Jeopardy! clue.
The category for the Final Jeopardy! clue was “1960’s Singers” as guest host Mayim Bialik tells contestants to make their wagers. The clue asks contestants to identify a heavily popular singer from the 1960’s blues era. The soulful singer in question had a replica statue erected in his hometown nearly two decades ago.
“And the song lives on,” “Jeopardy!” writes in the tweet, another hint for fans who like to play along.
“In 2002 Macon, Georgia, where he grew up, unveiled a statue of this man who sits overlooking the water, a nod to his posthumous number one hit,” the clue states.
With a relatively close match, the “Jeopardy!” contestants appear confident in their answers to the clue, knowing the stakes are high.
“Who is Otis Redding?” is the correct response to the clue. The song in question is Redding’s 1968 smash hit “Sitting on the Dock of the Bay.” The song was released as a single a month after Redding’s death in December of 1967. Redding was killed in a plane crash near Madison, Wisconsin. The song remains heavily popular to this day as an anthem for “taking it easy.”
‘Jeopardy!’ Contestant Pulls Out Win in Final Round
Only one contestant, Mara, was able to come up with the correct answer to the clue. In second place heading into Final Jeopardy!, Mara risked all of her money and come up with a big win. She went into the final round with $13,800 which was well shy of the lead. Mara took a huge gamble by wagering all of her winnings but was able to double her amount with the correct response. She ends the episode with a whopping $27,600 and is not the reigning champion. Her first episode as returning champ will be this evening as she goes for even more money and “Jeopardy!” glory.
Bialik is now eight episodes into her two-week tenure as the guest host of “Jeopardy!”. Her final episode is set for this Friday. Journalist and television personality Savannah Guthrie waits in the wings for her guest-hosting opportunity.
An actress and neuroscientist, Bialik has drawn excellent reviews for her performance thus far. “Jeopardy!” fans say she is a natural by the host’s lectern and would make a fine permanent host when the time comes. It isn’t yet known when “Jeopardy!” will select a new full-time host but many would like to see Bialik receive consideration.
