Is Jeopardy! legend Ken Jennings considered the GOAT or greatest of all time when it comes to contestants on the show?
It’s a fair question. After all, Ken Jennings is the second-most winningest player in the show’s history. He even defeated James Holzhauer and Brad Rutter at the show’s Jeopardy! The Greatest of All Time multi-part tournament. So while the argument may be settled on who the real Jeopardy! GOAT is, one Reddit user has questions about the different titles that Jennings has held over the years.
“What is Ken Jennings’ official title as a contestant?” they titled a thread on the forum. “Reigning Champion? Greatest of All Time?”
Reddit user u/MulhollandDrive brings up an interesting point here. It can be confusing to hear people call someone like Jennings a “reigning champion.” Because while he was at one time, the current champion on the show is Matt Amodio. The Ph.D. student from Yale University has quickly made his way into the Jeopardy! history books.
“Not asking about his executive producer role,” the OP continued. “I saw someone say ‘he’s not the reigning Jeopardy champion. That title belongs to the current champion who is on a current streak (Matt Amodio).’ And thus when The Chase refers to Ken Jennings as the Reigning Jeopardy Champion it’s inaccurate. And if the reigning champion was actually on the seat, it would be Matt.”
However, the user says that argument struck them as simple semantics and that there are not ‘official titles’ for Jeopardy! contestants.
‘Jeopardy!’ Fans Respond to Ken Jennings Reddit Post
Is Ken Jennings the actual GOAT of Jeopardy!? Again, there has never been an official designation handed out to him. But he did win the GOAT tournament against two of the other most-winningest players the show has seen. So, the resounding answer in this scenario has to be yes — Ken Jennings is unofficially the greatest Jeopardy! player ever.
Fans of the popular game show, meanwhile, have their own opinions on official titles for contestants.
“I mean, by definition ‘reigning champ’ refers to the most recent winner,” one person replied. “Referring to the GOAT tournament as ‘reigning’ champ (of the GOAT tournament) when it was presumably a one-time event doesn’t make sense to me. Even if it did, ‘Jeopardy! GOAT’ seems like a higher title.”
The original poster quickly responded. They were in agreement and even suggested that perhaps the best way to remedy the situation is to change the way Jennings is introduced on The Chase.
“Yeah, maybe change the way they introduce him on The Chase to ‘Jeopardy! Greatest of All Time’ in case anyone thinks the implication of ‘Reigning Champion’ is that he’s still continuing to play and dominate Jeopardy!.”
