The late Alex Trebek was a welcome guest in millions of homes on a nightly basis. For fellow TV personality Dr. Mehmet Oz, the relationship to the former “Jeopardy!” host and icon was a little more personal. The two men became close, with Oz counting himself “fortunate” to call Alex his friend. Accordingly, “Jeopardy!” recently invited Dr. Oz on the show as a guest host, where the TV health expert will spend two weeks filling the role of his former friend.
Dr. Oz used the opportunity at the beginning of his first show to recall his favorite memory of Alex Trebek. “Jeopardy!” took to Twitter and posted the heartwarming clip.
Dr. Oz on Alex Trebek: ‘He Was Most Proud of His Connection with All of You’
Dr. Oz is “honored” to be on the show as a guest host, and the amount of respect he holds for Alex Trebek as a public figure and a person is on full display here. For those that are unfamiliar, Trebek passed away in November of 2020, after battling pancreatic cancer. Amazingly, the longtime “Jeopardy!” host continued filming episodes of the show all the way up to a week before his death. He inspired millions of people with his heroic fight, and it is no wonder that Dr. Oz would cite Trebek’s pride in the room full of letters of support from people he impacted over the years as his favorite memory.
Further, Dr. Oz took pleasure in announcing that for the next two weeks, “Jeopardy!” will be generous enough to match the contestants’ winnings and donate that amount to his charity, HealthCorps. According to Oz, this generosity is in keeping with Trebek’s “desire to always pay it forward.”
Going forward, “Jeopardy!” will rotate through a series of guest hosts until they find a permanent replacement. The list of potential future hosts is extensive, with Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers slated to take the helm on April 5. Anderson Cooper and former “Big Bang Theory” star Mayim Bialik also round out the list.
