Dr. Sanjay Gupta is up next as guest host of “Jeopardy!”. And in a clip shared by the official “Jeopardy!” Twitter account, the CNN chief medical correspondent explained why “Jeopardy!” holds deep meaning for him and his family.

“I am the son of two engineers,” Gupta began. “Facts and data have always filled my life, and that’s what ‘Jeopardy!’ is all about. Whether watching with my parents or now my own three teenage daughters – who like to beat me, by the way – they are certainly watching right now.”

Gupta then turned to the contestants and set about introducing the categories for his first night of guest hosting.

Surgery Prepared Gupta for ‘Jeopardy!’

In a behind-the-scenes promotional video for “Jeopardy!,” Gupta talked more about his family’s connection to the show. He also discussed why surgery more than CNN prepared him to fill late host Alex Trebek’s vaunted role.

“My parents, who are immigrants to this country, they’re numbers and data and facts people, engineers, they love ‘Jeopardy!’,” he explained. “So we used to watch it together. And then I got a chance to watch it with my own kids. So when the opportunity came, it was, the whole family was really so enthusiastic about this, and I jumped at the opportunity.”

Gupta further explained that what helped him guest host the show was his experience as a surgeon, which requires precision under high-pressure conditions, more so than his CNN duties.

“I think being a surgeon prepared me more for this role because there is a precision to this show,” Gupta said. “There’s things you just gotta get right. You got to get them in the right order, you’ve got to do things a certain way each time.”

Show Is Searching for Permanent Host

Meanwhile, “Jeopardy!” is searching for a permanent replacement for Trebek, who died on Nov. 8, 2020 of stage 4 pancreatic cancer. The replacement will likely be selected from the series of guest hosts the show has had since Trebek’s final episode aired.

As for who is making that decision, “Jeopardy!” executive producer Mike Richards told the Wall Street Journal podcast “The Journal” that it’s ultimately up to Sony executives.

But they will not be making the decision on a whim or on subjective impressions. Richards said they’re drawing on “analytics and real testing” to make up their minds.

“They know what’s going on in the studio,” he explained. “They’re watching the feed, the tapings. It’s very extensive. It’s unlike anything I’ve ever been a part of, as far as testing in its size and scope.”
