On Monday night, Jeopardy! guest host Dr. Sanjay Gupta is making his debut, and he recently shared a secret about the game show’s wardrobe requirements.
The neurosurgeon, who is also CNN’s chief medical correspondent, will take the reins of Jeopardy! from June 29 to July 9. Gupta has already filmed his two-week run on the trivia show. Therefore he’s been making the rounds to talk about his time on set while sharing some behind-the-scenes information with fans.
Gupta spoke with HLN’s Morning Express with Robin Meade earlier today and opened up about his experience hosting the famous game show. He revealed that as an interim, he shot five episodes on his first day on set, and an additional five episodes during day two. So two weeks worth of game shows are taped in only 48 hours.
Yet it wasn’t the schedule he had trouble with. Gupta admitted he ran into a problem when Jeopardy! told him he needed to bring 10 suits with him to set. As the doctor joked, he didn’t have 10 suits to bring along in the first place.
“It was interesting, I took all my clothes out there. They wanted you to take 10 suits. I don’t have 10 suits,” Gupta said on Morning Express with Robin Meade.
“10?! Oh my gosh, who does?” Meade responded.
“Right. So they figured, I don’t know, I guess people who host game shows,” Gupta joked with Meade. “So I took shirts, they had my shirts re-cleaned and they gave me different ties. I mean they changed like how I look, which I thought was great. But also, hey, I’ve been doing this for 20 years, I think I kind of got it. No, you’re going to wear this tie. So you’ll notice some different wardrobe [changes].”
‘Jeopardy!’ Guest Host Dr. Sanjay Gupta Shares What Made Him ‘So Nervous’ About the Game Show
Tonight, CNN correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta will man the Jeopardy! podium as the show’s newest guest host. The neurosurgeon’s debut kicks off his two-week stint on the show. Gupta is taking over for Today show anchor Savannah Guthrie who finished her interim run on June 25.
Previous to his first appearance, Gupta gave an exclusive interview to Jeopardy! where he shared his thoughts about the game show. Like many other celebrities who have filled in for longtime host Alex Trebek since his November death, Gupta was “nervous” to take the reins of such an iconic program.
“I was super nervous,” Gupta explained in the interview. “I didn’t know exactly how this was going to play out. I’d never done anything quite like this.”
“But I think what made me most nervous is that I have just tremendous respect for the show,” he added. “So, I think when you have tremendous respect for something, you want to just treat it with that respect and just get everything right. That’s good. But it can also make you a bit nervous.”
