On Monday morning, Jeopardy! shared a clip of guest host Dr. Sanjay Gupta announcing how much money has been raised in total for charity.
Since legendary host Alex Trebek passed away in November, the popular game show has used a rotating cast of celebrity guest hosts. The show has brought in celebrities from across the entertainment industry. Journalists, broadcasters, actors, and even an NFL quarterback have taken over the Jeopardy! podium since earlier this year.
As each guest host finishes their temporary stint on Jeopardy!, the game show is donating huge sums of money to charity. Each interim is allowed to choose their favorite charity. The show then matches the total contestant winnings in that time period and writes the charity a check for the same amount. On Monday, Gupta shared an updated total for how much money Jeopardy! has donated altogether since the guest hosts took over the show.
“Over the past several months as Jeopardy! has featured guest hosts, the show has matched the total contestant winnings and made donations to some great causes. As of last week, Jeopardy! has donated more than $2 million to charity, and there’s much more to come,” Gupta announced.
“So good luck to Courtney, Mark, and Rebecca. I hope you earn a lot of money for both yourselves and the charity I selected, which is Odyssey Atlanta. Let’s play Jeopardy!,” Gupta added.
“So far, Jeopardy! has donated more than $2 million to charity!” the game show wrote on Instagram.
‘Jeopardy!’ Announces $94,258 Donation After Sanjay Gupta’s First Week
On Friday, Jeopardy! also announced how much money has been raised in Dr. Sanjay Gupta‘s first week hosting the show. CNN’s chief medical correspondent chose a hometown charity in the Atlanta area where he’s a neurosurgeon at Grady Memorial Hospital.
Gupta picked Odyssey Atlanta, a childcare and educational charity in Atlanta. The group works with kids in underserved areas to help them reach their life’s full potential. As Gupta’s first week came to a close, Jeopardy! matched the show’s total of $94, 258 in contestant earnings. A similar amount is expected in his second week, so Gupta’s charity should earn around a $200,000 donation.
The interim host also opened up about how much Odyssey Atlanta means to him personally. The neurosurgeon got emotional when sharing details about the organization.
“The charity I chose is Odyssey Atlanta,” Gupta shared in an exclusive Jeopardy! interview. “And I’m probably going to get a little emotional, I’ll warn you because it has been a tough year for kids through this pandemic. You know, I think a lot of kids, my kids have — they’ve done well. But I know a lot of kids haven’t been able to have the same resources. So, I thought it was a great opportunity to try and provide that for them. And the amount of money that this raised will transform some of these kids’ lives.”
