It has been an emotional night for Dr. Sanjay Gupta after seeing the first episode of Jeopardy! airing with him as its guest host.

Gupta is a neurosurgeon and chief of neurosurgery at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia. In addition to that, he is an award-winning journalist who has served as CNN’s chief medical correspondent for several years. But beginning on Monday evening, for the next two weeks he will stand behind the iconic Jeopardy! lectern as the host of the show. Gupta follows in the footsteps of NBC Today Show co-anchor Savannah Guthrie and her two-week stint as the game show’s host.

Dr. Gupta has been a fan of the show since he was just a little kid. As a matter of fact, his parents, who were immigrants to the United States, taught him to love the show even though they didn’t speak English. And ffter putting in hours of work behind the scenes, it had to have been extremely emotional to see himself in the same position that legendary Alex Trebek held for so long.

Gupta can only hope that he made Alex Trebek proud.

“I’ve been on TV for the past 20 years, but nothing could have prepared me for guest hosting @Jeopardy!. I hope I made Alex Trebek proud and I look forward to the next two weeks.”

‘Jeopardy!’ Fans Love Dr. Sanjay Gupta

Fans of Jeopardy!, on the other hand, were sure of themselves that Gupta had put together an outstanding performance. In fact, there were a number of Twitter users who are ready to make Dr. Sanjay Gupta the full-time host of the show starting now.

“You were great tonight,” a fan replied. “So personable interviewing the contestants and you appear to be a very smart guy.”

“As a Canadian and fan of the late great Alex Trebek, I feel that you would be an amazing replacement as a host on ‘Jeopardy!’.” Another follower wrote.

“You were great!! If you weren’t a superior Doctor, I’d say they need you on ‘Jeopardy!’ full time. BEST YET!” one of the top comments read. “BUT…we need you to stay in medicine.”

Meanwhile, there has been no indication as to whether Gupta would even be open to hosting the show full time. We’d be hard pressed to believe he would give up his important day jobs as one of the top brain surgeons and media correspondents in the nation.

If he did ever want the full-time hosting gig, though, it seems like he has quite the support of fans. He would lean on his surgery training more than anything to be the best host possible.

“I think that interestingly being a surgeon prepared me for this role because there is a precision to this show,” he said in a Jeopardy exclusive interview. “There are things you just gotta get right — you gotta do them in the right order, and you gotta do them a certain way each time.”

Leave it to a neurosurgeon to appreciate all of the intricate responsibilities that fall on the host of the show. It really is amazing how easy Alex Trebek made the job look.
