The current guest host of “Jeopardy!” Mike Richards was involved with the show before his current role.
However, his work was primarily behind-the-scenes up until now. Richards is the executive producer of the show. Richards replaced Harry Friedman starting in the 2020-2021 season as the executive producer of both “Jeopardy!” and “Wheel of Fortune” after he retired.
Richards has helped produce a variety of shows like “Weakest Link,” “The Price Is Right,” “Let’s Make a Deal,” and “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.”
He’s clearly had a lot of experience when it comes to producing quality, popular game shows. However, Mike Richards was surprised by how popular one of his shows was.
Richards Creates ‘The Randumb Show’
According to IMDb, Richards started his own show while he was going to school at Pepperdine University. It was called “The Randumb Show.” His show aired in Malibu through the local cable station.
Richards had no idea that celebrities living in Malibu were fans of his show. Specifically, Dick Clark was an avid viewer of”The Randumb Show.”
Dick Clark was widely known for his work as a TV personality, producer, and film actor. He hosted “$10,000 Pyramid,” “$20,000 Pyramid,” and “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve.”
While the show is long gone now, Richards has recycled the name itself into something new.
In 2014, he had a podcast with the same name. Here Richards talked about his inside knowledge on TV, pop culture, and game shows. He was also often joined with actress and writer Beth Triffon. Richards no longer creates new episodes of the podcast.
On the show, they had talked about anything from the “Full House” reboot to everything related to “The Price Is Right.” Richards also had a number of guests on the show like Ken Jennings, Melissa Ordway, Chrissy Teigen, Adam Sandler, and Monty Hall.
Mike Richards will be replaced by “Today” show host and “CBS Evening News” anchor Katie Couric on March 8. He will then return to his role off-screen as executive producer.
The Popularity of Mike Richards
So far, Richards has been a hit with viewers as a guest host on “Jeopardy!”
In fact, many fans are calling for him to be the new full-time host to replace Alex Trebek. The show has not decided on a permanent host yet, however, as executive producer, Richards will play a big role in making that future decision.
Fans like his balance of humor and seriousness. They also think that having a less famous and not as recognizable person as the host is the right move.
Richards didn’t know he would be hosting until right before. His performance as the host is whatever Richards is naturally able to give.
“I didn’t know I was going to be doing it until three days before, and so I had not prepared myself to host in the way that I know other guest hosts are. So there was just a lot to unpack … “Plus, I also only owned one suit, so there was a little bit of scrambling there … It was very fun; humbling doesn’t begin to describe the feeling. It hit me like a ton of bricks when Johnny Gilbert announced my name. That’s of course the last thing you hear when you start to walk out. … and it was overwhelming in the moment,” Richards said in an interview with USA Today.
