During a recent episode of Jeopardy! this week, host Ken Jennings couldn’t help himself when he followed up a contestant’s wrong answer with a dad joke. He then proceeded to hilariously apologize to his fans for the dad joke in a post on social media.

Jennings is a well-known Jeopardy! legend from his time as a contestant on the popular game show. Back in 2004, he won 74 straight games, which is still the record on the show by far. He later became a consultant working with the staff of the show. But these days, he’s back in front of the camera hosting Jeopardy!. Jennings will man the podium for the rest of the year as the show continues its search for longtime host Alex Trebek’s permanent replacement.

Earlier this week, Jennings hosted the show while champion Andrew He chose the “National Geographic Ocean: A Global Odyssey” category for $800. The clue read: “A very brave cleaner shrimp gets a meal of parasites and dead skin from the mouth of one of these scary predators.” Contestant Jeff Meyers buzzed in and answered, “What is an eel?” Although that was in general correct, it wasn’t specific enough.

Jennings said that the show was looking for a more specific answer, so Meyers said “electric eel.” Unfortunately, that was incorrect as well. No other competitors buzzed in, so Jennings dropped the dad joke.

“As Dean Martin might’ve said, ‘That’s Amore,’” Jennings said while referring to the correct answer of a moray eel.

The official Jeopardy! Twitter account tweeted about the amusing moment and wrote, “Dad joke alert!

Jennings saw the post, and retweeted it while adding his own hilarious caption.

“I will be coming to your homes individually to apologize for this,” Jennings jokingly said.

‘Jeopardy!’ Legend Ken Jennings Pays Tribute to Alex Trebek

Last Monday, on the first anniversary of longtime host Alex Trebek’s death, Ken Jennings took over hosting duties of the game show. The iconic Jeopardy! host died last Nov. 8 aged 80 after a long battle with pancreatic cancer.

In addition to Jennings’ recent appearance at the podium, he was the first guest host to take over the show back in January. He knew Trebek well from his years of involvement with the game show and made sure to pay tribute as he took over once again.

“I miss Alex a lot,” Ken said in a Jeopardy! clip released on the one-year anniversary of Trebek’s death. “When I’m here, I feel like he’s probably in the building somewhere. It’s hard not to talk about him in the present tense.”

That same day, Trebek received an outpouring of love from the show’s past competitors and fans. Trebek’s family honored his legacy as well with memorial posts on social media.

“My beloved husband passed away one year ago… one of his final messages was that of the importance of having compassion for each other,” Trebek’s wife, Jean, captioned her Instagram post. “In honor of Alex’s beautiful and powerful life, please take a moment to watch this short video.”
