Following Savannah Guthrie’s two-week stint as guest host on “Jeopardy!” CNN’s chief medical correspondent, Dr. Sanajy Gupta, is next to step behind the famous podium. Since January, viewers of the classic quiz show have seen several guest hosts since the death of the long-running host, Alex Trebek, who passed away in November from pancreatic cancer.
Before Gupta, NBC news anchor Savannah Guthrie was the latest of ten temporary celebrity hosts on the game show. Guthrie’s time as a presenter came to an end on June 25.
However, her time on the show was marred by controversy after the public pressured production to apologize for a question about postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome where they called the diagnosis “Grinch syndrome.” During the apology, the show called the term “outdated and inaccurate.”
Now, Gupta hopes to leave a positive impression during his time on the show. On Monday, Gupta’s episodes began airing. His last show will air on Sunday, July 9.
The “60 Minutes” contributor and associate chief of neurosurgery at Atlanta’s Grady Memorial Hospital is also the second guest host with a background in neuroscience. Fellow guest host and “Big Bang” actress Mayim Bialik also has experience in the field.
As with previous guest hosts, the game show plans to donate to a charity of Gupta’s choosing. The doctor’s charity of choice is Odyssey Atlanta, which helps children from underserved communities go to summer camp. When the show announced Gupta would be stepping behind the podium as a guest host, Gupta took to his social media to honor Trebek.
On Twitter, he described the honor, writing, “I used to watch @jeopardy with my parents and now with my own kids. The thing is: there is just something so beautiful and reassuring about facts, simple straightforward facts. I cherish that. An honor to be an upcoming guest host, but seriously miss the great Alex Trebek.”
‘Jeopardy!’ Guest Hosts After Dr. Sanjay Gupta

The show announced additional guest hosts in April. Following Gupta, “Good Morning America’s” George Stephanopoulos will host from July 12 to July 16.
Afterward, fans will see fellow “Good Morning America” co-anchor Robin Roberts take her place from July 19 to July 23. Next up, fan-favorite and former host of “Reading Rainbow,” LeVar Burton, will behind his stint on July 26 and concludes on July 30.
David Faber, co-host of CNBC’s “Squawk on the Street,” will also be a “Jeopardy!” guest host from August 2 to August 6. Finally, Fox Sports correspondent Joe Buck will round out the guest-host roster from August 9 to August 13.
