“Jeopardy!” icon James Holzhauer doesn’t play around. When it comes to roasting his fellow quiz champions on social media, the gloves come off and he starts swinging.
Every Sunday, ABC airs its latest, hottest trivia game show, “The Chase.” It features “Jeopardy!” legends James Holzhauer, Ken Jennings, and Brad Rutter, who all have a place in the “Jeopardy!” Hall of Fame. Jennings holds the record for the highest consecutive games won (74), Holzhauer holds the highest single-game winnings ($131,127), and Rutter holds the highest all-time winnings (almost $5 million). Together, the three make a (nearly) unstoppable team.
Enter “The Chase’s” latest trivia champ addition: Mark Labbett, aka “The Beast.” Labbett joined season two of the game show and the ranks of the three “Jeopardy!” champions. Though the British quiz head may not be well known around here, he still has an impressive track record across 700 episodes of three different trivia shows, according to TV Insider.
Though, by Holzhauer’s standards, The Beast only talks a big game. While live-tweeting the premiere of last night’s episode, the “Jeopardy!” legend directly called out his fellow co-star in the best way.
“The Beast is the most overhyped British import since Oasis. #TheChase,” Holzhauer tweeted.
Several fans applauded Holzhauer for his sick burn for The Beast, but a surprising number also replied to the tweet just to defend the British rock band. One fan called Holzhauer’s tweet “fighting words.” Another said, “Oasis slander not tolerated.” And another called Oasis “a very solid band.” A few just linked videos to the rock band’s hit song “Wonderwall” to prove their point.
Either way, Holzhauer knows how to wield his words with deadly precision. His fellow”The Chase” co-stars better be careful or he’ll come for them on Twitter next.
What Do the “Jeopardy!” Legends Have to Say About ‘The Chase?’
Before the premiere of season two last month, “The Chase” sat down all of its “Chasers” to ask what they like about the job. On the show, “Jeopardy!” legends Jennings, Holzhauer, and Rutter (and now Labbett) answer several trivia questions to keep ordinary contestants from winning and keeping cash prizes.
When answering what he likes best about the job, “The Beast” had just one answer. “It’s the job I was born to do: To be a world-class trivia player, to have a bit of a sense of humor, and to be just that little bit of a bastard.”
Rutter had a much more chill response. “It’s fun to hang out with the other Chasers. You know, we give each other a hard time, but it’s still a lot of fun.”
Then he went in for the kill. “I get to make fun of Ken. That’s obviously the best perk. And I also get to chase down some regular people which is really fun. And you get to meet people from all walks of life from all over the country and take money from them.”
Holzhauer cut right to the point. “I think that being a Chaser is the perfect job for me — I get to send people home, show my superiority, and take their money away. I wouldn’t trade any of that.”
