“Jeopardy!” legend James Holzhauer loves nothing more than provoking his favorite people through sarcastic but clever insults on Twitter. Yesterday’s roast victim was none other than Mark “The Beast” Labbett, Holzhauer’s co-star on ABC’s “The Chase.”
After shattering several records on his 2019 “Jeopardy!” run, Holzhauer turned to a new quiz show to sharpen his trivia skills. He’s joined by fellow “Jeopardy!” legends Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter on the ABC show, as well as newcomer Mark Labbett.
Labbett came into “The Chase” with an impressive resume, boasting 700 episodes across three different quiz shows, according to TV Insider. But he immediately butt heads with the “Jeopardy!” champ, who was determined not to let the Brit get too comfortable on the American game show.
The rivalry continued yesterday when Holzhauer went digging through Labbett’s trivia show history. He shared a link to Netflix’s British version of “The Chase,” which starred Labbett.
“Never forget when @MarkLabbett lost all his Chaser cred,” Holzhauer captioned the link.
As if that wasn’t cutting enough, Holzhauer even followed it up with a reply that specified, “Link appears dubious but season 3 episode 7 ‘All In.'”
This episode was the exact moment, in Holzhauer’s eyes, when Labbett lost “all” his cred as a Chaser. Ouch.
But Labbett didn’t let the “Jeopardy!” star’s comments slide. He followed up with two replies of his own, each meant to put Holzhauer back in his place.
“You were nothing without your two teammates :),” Labbett commented, referring to Jennings and Rutter. While Labbett starred on the original show by himself, the new version of the “The Chase” cycles between the four Chasers.
Labbett also tweeted, “Hopefully I showed you the last lesson a chaser needs: when to take your beating like a man 🙂 it will happen to you one day Jeopardy James.”
Holzhauer being referred to as “Jeopardy James” might just be the funniest part about this whole exchange.
‘Jeopardy!’ Legend James Holzhauer Keeps Calling Out Co-Stars On Twitter
Labbett shouldn’t worry himself too much, though. He’s not the only Chaser Holzhauer routinely roasts on Twitter.
In the last few weeks, the “Jeopardy!” champ has also called out Jennings and Rutter. Holzhauer burned Rutter in reference to a tweet about current “Jeopardy!” cham, Matt Amodio. One fan tweeted that they thought Amodio “is the new James Holzhauer.”
Rather than take the opportunity to comment on Amodio’s incredible track record so far, Holzhauer decided this was the perfect time to roast Rutter. “When I was on they said ‘James is the new Brad Rutter’ which was a compliment at the time.”
We’re sure Rutter still feels the sting from that one.
But out of anyone else, Ken Jennings must be immune to Holzhauer’s numerous tweets at this point. He’s been the victim of Holzhauer’s scathing wit more times than we can count. And the latest burn comes courtesy of the announcement that Mike Richards, not Jennings, had gotten the permanent host position (though Richards has since stepped down).
In an attempt to be encouraging and supportive, Holzhauer told Jennings, “Keep your head up, tryouts for the role of Second Best Chaser are still ongoing.” Challenge accepted, anyone?
