The OG king of “Jeopardy!” is speaking out on the up-and-coming legend currently dominating the trivia show.
Ken Jennings is known for his 74-game streak back in 2004. Since then, he has appeared in a number of tournaments, other game shows, and also hosted the show immediately following the death of the longtime beloved host, Alex Trebek.
Since his time on the show, plenty of other contestants have had quite an impressive run. Whether that means having a winning streak, winning huge sums of money, or having an excellent correct answer ratio.
Right now, Matt Amodio is gaining a lot of attention. He is now the fourth highest-grossing player in “Jeopardy!” history. He won his 14th game on Monday night. He will go on to continue the streak on Tuesday.
During his incredibly successful and ongoing time on “Jeopardy!” Matt Amodio has gotten a lot of haters. Ken Jennings took to Twitter to comment on the situation by saying, “This guy is the Jeopardy! story no one is following.”
While this isn’t 100% true, it seems to suggest Jennings finds Amodio’s streak and earnings quite impressive. His streak has gotten a good amount of attention, as well as hate.
One user wrote, “Anyone claiming a legitimate reason for hating on Adam [Matt] is just making things up. He’s been humble, soft-spoken, reserved, and measured. His strategy is obvious and he sticks to it, and I honestly think that’s both bold and smart. Adam [Matt] is top-notch.”
Matt Amodio Criticism and ‘Jeopardy!’ Drama
Matt gets some criticism because he always answers with “what is,” despite the fact many answers require “who is” to technically be correct in a grammatical sense. He commented on this hate during an interview with Entertainment Weekly, “I do hear some people say that it’s disrespectful to the game, and I would counter that if there was a Jeopardy! fan club ranking, I think I would have a strong case to be number one Jeopardy! fan. I live and breathe the show, I love every aspect of it, and so I’m definitely not doing it out of any disrespect or undermining of the show.”
So, Matt Amodio is getting media attention. However, he is also competing with the fact that “Jeopardy!” is in the final stages of selecting a permanent host for the trivia show. While the show has been rotating a series of guest hosts, the goal has always been to select the full-time person before the start of the next season. The new season is set to start filming soon, meaning “Jeopardy!” is surely very close to making an official announcement.
According to Variety, Executive Producer Mike Richards is supposedly in the final stages of a deal with the show to become the new host. He has been the executive producer since 2020, right in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Fans of the show have been fixated on this drama with the new host as the top “Jeopardy!” news story. Nothing is finalized yet and the inside source did say that several other potential candidates are still talking with executives. However, Richards is very much the front-runner.
