Sony announced that Mike Richards would be the permanent Jeopardy! host on August 11th. That day, fans of the show reacted to the news. To say that they were both vocal and displeased would be an understatement. However, many of the candidates for the gig remained silent.
Earlier today, just nine days after the initial announcement, we found out that Mike Richards is out as host. While we have no idea who will replace him, we do know that Jeopardy! fans aren’t upset by the news. Not long after the news broke, Jeopardy! champ James Holzhauer took to Twitter to share his opinion on the debacle. Needless to say, he wasn’t fond of the idea of Richards hosting in the first place.
After hearing that Richards wouldn’t host Jeopardy!, Holzhauer feined disappointment. In his tweet, he wrote that he was looking forward to the season premiere. He sarcastically noted that he was hoping to see a premiere in which, “after an exhaustive 61-clue search for the next Jeopardy champion, the show looks past the three obvious candidates and declares Mike Richards the winner.”
In the tweet Jeopardy! James echoes the feelings of many of the show’s fans. Many fans believed that Mike Richards somehow rigged the selection process so that he would be chosen for the prestigious job.
When Mike Richards was selected as host, many people affiliated with the show remained silent. However, James Holzhauer wasn’t one of them.
James Holzhauer Fired Shots at Mike Richards on the 11th
Hours after the world learned that Mike Richards would helm Jeopardy!, Holzhauer fired off a tweet. In that post, he let everyone know how he felt about the decision. At the same time, it looks like James saw the writing on the wall.
James Holzhauer said that next season’s Jeopardy! games would look a little different. “Also new for next season,” he wrote, “contestants can submit two Final Jeopardy responses in case the first one causes public backlash.”
Sony announced that Mike Richards would share hosting duties with Blossom alum Mayim Bialik. Only one of those individuals had the potential to cause a massive backlash. It didn’t take long for Jeopardy! to catch the brunt of the fan base’s ire.
James Holzhauer was throwing some serious shade at Mike Richards. However, he might be on to something. Is it possible that the people behind the scenes at Jeopardy!, Richards included, knew there would be public backlash? If so, did they select Bialik as a ready replacement? Most likely, the answer to those questions will forever be left up to speculation.
