Even before he began his brief stint as the guest host of “Jeopardy!” LeVar Burton was the man some fans of the popular quiz show wanted as the permanent replacement of the late Alex Trebek.
Trebek passed away due to cancer in November 2020. Since that time, several guest hosts have stepped behind his podium to host the show. Burton’s time behind that podium only lasted one week. Most of the guest hosts have been on the show for two weeks except for the last few. Burton’s episodes of “Jeopardy!” aired from Monday, July 25, through Friday, July 30.
Now that the man famous for “Reading Rainbow” and his roles in “Roots” and “Star Trek: The Next Generation” has completed his guest-hosting stint, fans are sharing their thoughts on his performance. According to PopCulture, he has received rave reviews from many “Jeopardy!” fans. Others have criticized a mistake he made while hosting, while others seem to be annoyed that so many people want him to be the show’s next full-time host.
Here are some of the rave reviews LeVar Burton has received from “Jeopardy!” fans on Twitter.
“It was a great week! You were a fantastic host. I hadn’t watched Jeopardy since Alex passed, but I watched every night you hosted. I hope ‘Jeopardy’ decides to bring you back permanently,” user @TerminatorLx shared.
User @irishclover said: “Great job to @levarburton! He taught a generation to love books and is reminding us to love knowledge and always be curious; encouraging our right answers every step of the way.”
“Can we keep him? Please? It was the best week of hosting and you could tell there was a connection between Levar and all the contestants,” @ResistanceJane posted.
Other Fans Shared Negative Reactions to LeVar Burton’s Time as the Guest Host of ‘Jeopardy!’
Just like most things on the internet, there are those who were not pleased with LeVar Burton’s work on “Jeopardy!” And, some of them really don’t want him to be the full-time host.
“Yes what a week. You truly ruined the show. You should have prepared instead of just assuming it was in the bag. How could you not even know your cues? Even the contestants seemed over you and I have never seen that on @Jeopardy before,” @charlespoet1 posted to Twitter.
“Probably one of my least favorite guest hosts so far. His hosting style was more akin to something you’d expect on Nickelodeon rather than ‘Jeopardy!’ It’s too bad because I really was looking forward to his hosting but the yelling and overly excited style were way off,” @PJYarnie shared.
“Indeed..his pre-hosting hype really did him in…the performance in those 5 episodes surely did not live up to the hype that he and his fandom spewed across the interwebs,” posted @zabawiac.
LeVar Burton also took to Twitter to share his feelings about his time as the guest host of “Jeopardy!” Here’s what he had to say: “So grateful and humbled. Thank you everyone for this opportunity of a lifetime. Thank you to the folks at Jeopardy! and the Sony team and to the contestants. What a week!”
