Former Star Trek and Reading Rainbow star LaVar Burton wants in on the Jeopardy! guest hosting action.

Since the passing of long-time host Alex Trebek last year, Jeopardy! is turning to celebrities to carry on hosting duties. Former contestant Ken Jennings, executive producer Mike Richards, journalist Katie Couric and talk show host Dr. Mehmet Oz have already taken turns hosting the show. National Football League superstar quarterback Aaron Rodgers began his reign as the show’s host yesterday (Monday). All five of the guest hosts thus far have received positive reviews.

Now, it is LaVar Burton who is petitioning Jeopardy! powers-that-be to get a turn as guest host — literally. Burton took to social media on Monday to tweet his desire to serve in the role. He includes a link to a Change.org fan-created petition geared toward landing Burton on the hit quiz show. It is safe to say that the former television star has a large number of supporters in his corner.

“Leaving this here in the event the powers that be are listening,” he writes in the social media post.

‘Jeopardy!’ Fans Want to see LaVar Burton as Host

The Monday tweet links to the petition where fans of the star can add their names in hopes of Burton getting a chance on Jeopardy! His social media post took in well over 27,000 “likes” and hundreds of comments. Many commenters say Burton would make a great guest host on Jeopardy! and that he should pursue the opportunity with gusto.

Burton has a huge number of supporters and the petition is doing so well that Jeopardy! producers may have no choice but to consider him. The goal set by the petition starters is 150,000 signatures, but it looks like they will surpass that goal by quite a bit. As of Monday afternoon, the petition has more than 137,000 signees with more rolling in by the second. Creators of the petition make their intentions clear in its description.

“This petition is to show Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc. and producers Mike Richards and Harry Friedman just how much love the public has for Burton, and how much we’d all love to see him as the next host of Jeopardy!” the description reads.

While Burton would make for a fantastic Jeopardy! host, time will tell if he actually lands the role.
