‘Jeopardy!’: LeVar Burton Makes Guest Hosting Debut and Fans are Loving It

by Anna Dunn

After months of alternating Jeopardy! hosts, it’s finally LeVar Burton’s turn. The former Star Trek star and Reading Rainbow host was a fan favorite before he even hit the stage, and he has not disappointed thus far.

Burton was selected as a guest host after a fan-made petition was created in his honor. The petition, which not only calls for him to guest host but for him to host permanently, has half a million signatures.

Some Twitter fans have gone as far as calling LeVar a perfect replacement. Many agree with the sentiment.

It’s no surprise that Twitter has Burton’s back. Burton helped raise a generation of curious minds with his work on Reading Rainbow, and he’s acknowledged just how grateful he is for their support.

Burton is known for his incredibly warm and kind demeanor. He also has quite a sense of humor. Many who tuned in noticed how soothing his voice was right away, and feel it added an incredible atmosphere to Jeopardy!

Burton Felt a Ton of Pressure To Get the Job Done Right

The only negative thing people really had to say is that he seemed nervous. Which, can you blame him? The pressure of performing on the stage on arguably the most famous game show in the world while also knowing that millions have high expectations must be a bit unnerving.

Not only that, but he felt pressure to live up to the legacy Alex Trebek left behind. Trebek hosted the show for almost 40 years and Jeopardy! fans are fiercely protective of his legacy.

“For me, my standard of excellence is so intense that my initial approach was to try and be as good as Alex was,” explained to Good Morning America “Of course, I realized right away that that was an impossibility.”

Others noted just how natural Burton felt on Jeopardy! Many think that he belongs right on that stage. This included LeVar Burton himself, who made it no secret that he’s gunning for the full-time position.

LeVar Burton Has His Eyes on a Full-Time Jeopardy! Gig

LeVar Burton wants this job full-time, and it would mean a lot to a lot of people.

“It’s difficult to explain, but there’s something inside me that says this makes sense,” he said in an interview with  The New York Times earlier this year. “I feel like this is what I’m supposed to do. I have been watching Jeopardy! more or less every night of my life since Art Fleming was host. Jeopardy! is a cultural touchstone, and for a Black man to occupy that podium is significant.”

Not to mention, Burton has been eying this position since before it was available. For years, Burton has tweeted about his dream to host. Now, fans are hoping that dream will come true.
