The battle for the next permanent “Jeopardy!” host is heating up. And now LeVar Burton is throwing his own hat in the ring for the position. If the game show must have a replacement host after the passing of Alex Trebek, Burton believes he’s the man to do it.

Burton said he would be the best candidate for the “Jeopardy!” job in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly.

“I don’t believe there is anyone out there who is better suited for this job than me,” Burton told EW. “And I will go to my grave believing that.”

Fans certainly seem to agree. Burton first became interested in the position thanks to a fan petition. A group of passionate viewers started a Change.com petition to land Burton the role. So far, the petition has over 220,000 signatures and growing. Burton took that petition to heart.

“They want this for me as much as I want it for me, I believe, because it makes so much sense to them too,” Burton said. “Love of the franchise, check. Loves knowledge and curiosity, check. I spent 26 years talking directly to people through the camera lens, check. I bring an audience of Gen X-ers and millennials—checkmate!”

‘Jeopardy!’ And the Show’s Past Guest Hosts

Of course, LeVar Burton may seem like a wildcard candidate to replace Trebek. Because currently, the actor isn’t lined up to fill in as a guest host on the show. If that’s part of the criteria, then Burton may find himself counted out of consideration. But Burton would make a fine host for “Jeopardy!” checking many of the boxes needed for a permanent hosting position.

But some of the show’s current guest hosts aren’t prepared to go down without a fight. Two of the guest hosts have expressed an interest in hosting the show full-time. And they are well qualified candidates as well in their own right.

Ken Jennings kicked off the list of guest hosts and is a worthy successor to Alex Trebek’s empire. For one, Jennings may be the greatest “Jeopardy!” candidate to ever play the game. He’s won 74 consecutive matches and has an absolute love for trivia. Jennings has expressed an interest in getting another chance at hosting and admitted he grew comfortable in the role.

Meanwhile, Green Bay Packers quarterback and current “Jeopardy!” guest host Aaron Rodgers may be the most vocal about the job. The athlete is enthusiastic about the game show being his dream job and has already worked out how he could host and play football. But whoever ends up with the position will have big shoes to fill.
