After months of anticipation, “Jeopardy!” fans finally got the answers they needed. Guest host after guest host has eventually led us to a full-time replacement for trivia legend Alex Trebek.
The catch was that two are better than one. Mike Richards will host the syndicated game show and Mayim Bialik will tap in for any special spin-offs or competitions and the primetime show.
Given the fact that “Jeopardy!” showed fans so many potential hosts for the future, clearly everyone had picked their favorite. Whether that was Katie Couric or Aaron Rodgers or Ken Jennings, this full-time position was rather controversial and highly sought after.
Wayne Brady Supports LeVar Burton
Even after the official announcement, people are still clinging to LeVar Burton. He is infamous for his days on “Star Trek: The Next Generation” as well as hosting “Reading Rainbow.” He was perhaps the most highly anticipated guest host and fans tirelessly advocated for him to replace Trebek.
Wayne Brady, a comedian known for also hosting “Let’s Make a Deal” and “Game of Talents,” shared his opinion when it comes to finding the full-time person for the “Jeopardy!” gig.
“I think that LeVar Burton would be an amazing host because he’s proven already in just the short run that he’s done that he has what it takes. I think not only does he have the gravitas, but America loves and trusts him,” Brady said to Heavy.
People had even taken to signing a petition to get Burton behind that podium permanently. A Change.org petition even got 267,000 signatures. For many, Burton would also help diversify the TV world.
“So he’s a part of Americana and I think in this day and time, it’s wonderful to see another person of color inhabit a show that is predicated on knowledge. So that’s another piece that balances out other forms of entertainment. To see LeVar at the helm of that ship would make me very happy,” Brady said.
Burton Fans and ‘Jeopardy!’ Host Decision
For months, fans eagerly awaited Burton’s time behind the podium and campaigned for his full-time spot on the show.
However, LeVar Burton’s time on the show had the lowest ratings of all the guest hosts. This was mostly due to the fact that he was on at the same time as the Tokyo Olympics. Many people were happy that two people were announced, but wished that Burton could have been involved instead.
One user wrote, “I’m glad to see Mayim Bialik, but definitely was on team LeVar Burton. The two of them would’ve been great together.”
Burton hasn’t directly responded to the announcement. He has been incredibly grateful and gracious during this entire journey, however.
Meanwhile, his fans still have his back, “Jeopardy!” host or not. Ava DuVernay, a filmmaker known for “Selma,” “A Wrinkle in Time,” and “Middle of Nowhere” tweeted that she would take matters into her own hands. Burton responded by telling her to check her DMS, so possibly something is in store in the future.
