‘Jeopardy!’: Listen to Sting Put Lyrics to the Iconic Theme Song

The multi-Grammy-Award-winning, former Police-heading, prolific singer/songwriter Sting can now add “first to put lyrics to the ‘Jeopardy!’ theme song on his resume, too.

Whether you know him as the former lead singer of Police, Gordon Sumner, or simply Sting, there’s no denying the impact this legend has had on music entertainment. For Thursday’s episode of ‘Jeopardy!’, however, Sting would take this a step further than anyone thought possible.

While appearing on the game show for March 18’s episode, Sting was all smiles as he presented his own category. But that’s not all he did. To bring closure to his appearance, the rock legend pulled out his gorgeous acoustic guitar – and began to play.

And not just any song did Sting play… Not even one from his extensive library of hits. No, for this special ‘Jeopardy!’ occasion, the icon strummed his own composition of the timeless ‘Jeopardy’ theme song… And then put his own lyrics to it.

So you may commit it to memory and sing along in every episode from now til the end of time, allow us to jot down Sting’s magnificent poetry:

“Of all the things in my CV
Everything in life, from A to Z
But how I wish my ma could see
Here I am on Jeopardy!

Here I am on Jeopardy!”

Sting – original composition of ‘Jeopardy!” theme song, ‘Think!’

Now, without further ado, please enjoy Sting’s rendition of ‘Think!’:

The Startling Legacy of ‘Jeopardy!’s Theme Song, ‘Think!’

All in all, we have entertainment mogul Merv Griffin to thank for both ‘Jeopardy!’ and its unbelievably-catchy theme. According to the man himself, Griffin originally wrote the song for his son as a lullaby. He would later put the tune to use in the form of ‘Think!’ for the game show of his own creation.

But that’s far from the most startling facts about this iconic song. Way back in May of 2005, Griffin told the New York Times that it took him “less than a minute” to whip up the timeless melody. And it has made him millions-upon-millions of dollars.

“That little 30 seconds has made me a fortune, millions,” Griffin told the trade.

When pressed to reveal exactly how many millions, the mogul was hesitant. “You don’t want to know…” he replied coyly.

Eventually, however, the NYT would get Griffin to crack.

“Probably close to $70-80 million,” he recalls. Excuse me? That’s the total economy of a small country!

On its way to earning Merv one of his many vast fortunes, ‘Think’ would go through many incarnations on ‘Jeopardy!’ – many of which you can relive with us right here on Outsider.com.
