Together, ‘Jeopardy!’ and their current guest host, journalism icon Katie Couric, are set to match all winnings in a donation to her SU2C Pancreatic Cancer Dream Team.
It’s a remarkable and fitting announcement from a remarkable and fitting matchup. As the world continues to miss the irreplaceable Alex Trebek, ‘Jeopardy!’ and Katie Couric are working together to match all winnings during her tenure as interim host towards Pancreatic Cancer research. The form of cancer is, tragically, what ultimately claimed Trebek’s life.
“Jeopardy! will make a donation to @SU2C’s Pancreatic Dream Team based on the cumulative winnings of the contestants that compete during @katiecouric’s two-week guest host appearance!” the gameshow announced on Twitter Monday. The caption comes alongside a clip of Couric’s first episode and introduction as host.
“Welcome to ‘Jeopardy!,’ everyone. It is such a thrill to be here guest hosting a show I’ve watched and loved for years,” Couric begins in her first night of hosting. “And of course, a real honor to help out as all of us recover from the loss of the truly irreplaceable Alex Trebek,” she continues.
“I’m really excited to announce that ‘Jeopardy!’ will be matching the winnings from each show I guest host and donating that amout to the Pancreatic Cancer Dream Team from Stand Up to Cancer,” the guest host reveals with a huge smile. “So thank you, ‘Jeopardy!'”
“Now let’s have some fun!” she lauds to her first set of contestants. Watch the full reveal and statement from Katie Couric and ‘Jeopardy!’ below – and get ready for the journalism legend’s tenure as the first female host in the show’s history.
Katie Couric’s Co-Founded SU2C to Factor Heavily into ‘Jeopardy!’ Hosting
In addition to her journalistic legacy, Couric is also a New York Times bestselling author. In addition, her philanthropic work saw the icon co-found her Stand Up to Cancer organization in 2008. As such, Couric is ensuring her time as host is put to good use, and will see contestant’s winnings completely matched towards SU2C’s pancreatic cancer division during her two-week tenure.
“The amount donated will equal the cumulative winnings of the contestants that compete during the weeks Couric will serve as guest host,” ‘Jeopardy!’ confirms in our previous coverage.
Indeed, Couric is off to a tremendous start, as expected. Following in her footsteps as upcoming interim hosts will be Dr. Mehmet Oz, Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, Call Me Kat star Mayim Bialik, with 60 Minutes correspondent Bill Whitaker rounding out the bunch.
