Just days after he was announced the new Jeopardy! permanent host, Mike Richards is apologizing for the past embarrassing podcast jokes that have surfaced.

According to The Ringer, the Jeopardy! executive producer turn host was a co-host of The Randumb Show, which ran from 2013 to 2014. During his time on the podcast, Richards used offensive language and insults against various women and their bodies.

In one September 2014 episode, the Jeopardy! host appeared to have asked his co-host and assistant, both of whom are women, whether they take nude pictures of themselves. When one said she sometimes does if she feels cute, he responded with, “Like booby pictures? What are we looking at?’ Later, he asked to go through her phone.

That wasn’t the only incident. The soon-to-be Jeopardy! host also criticized one-piece swimsuits by stating they make women look “really frumpy and overweight.”

‘Jeopardy!’ Host Mike Richards Responds to Resurfaced Podcast Remarks

Upon being asked for a comment about the surfaced podcast remarks, the Jeopardy! star issued a statement. “It is humbling to confront a terribly embarrassing moment of misjudgment, thoughtlessness, and insensitivity from nearly a decade ago. Looking back now, there is no excuse, of course, for the moments I made on this podcast and I am sorry.”

The now permanent Jeopardy! host then states that the podcast was originally intended to be a series of irreverent conversations between longtime friends who had a history of joking around. “Even with the passage of time, it’s more than clear that my attempts to be funny and provocative were not acceptable. And I have removed the episodes.”

Richards then shares that his responsibility today as a father, husband, and public person who speaks to many people through his role on television means he has substantial and serious obligations as a role model. “And I intend to live up to them.”

The Ringer also reached out for a comment from Sony but has not received an official response. The media outlet shares that a source at Sony revealed that the studio did not know about the podcast’s actual existence or the episodes’ removal until it was contacted by the media outlet.

Mike Richards Declared ‘Jeopardy!’ Permanet Co-Host

Jeopardy! Is currently gearing up for its 38th season. Richards will be the host of the syndicated Jeopardy!  while former Big Bang Theory star Mayim Bialik will host primetime and other Jeopardy! related competitions as well as tournaments.

Although both hosts actually received fairly decent fan feedback and praise, not everyone was overwhelmed with the decision of Richards. On Sunday, Last Week Tonight talk show host John Oliver made a few digs at Richards. “Holy sh—. It is genuinely hard to image a five-word phrase less welcome than ‘We know who you are’ aside from, obviously, ‘New Jeopardy! host Mike Richards.’”

Richards is currently filming new episodes now, and the 38th season will premiere on September 13th.
