CNN’s Dr. Sanjay Gupta will be Jeopardy!’s next guest host, and the show is giving fans a peek of what he’ll be like behind the lectern.
The show uploaded a montage of some of the highlights from his two weeks of shows to its Instagram account on Saturday.
“Renowned neurosurgeon @drsanjaygupta is heading behind the lectern for the next two weeks! As part of his appearance, Jeopardy! will donate to his charity of choice, @odysseyatlanta. @cnn”
Gupta seemed natural, especially for someone who’s never hosted a game show before.
“As a neurosurgeon, I understand the importance of exercising your brain,” he says, setting up a quip in the clips package. “So, I recommend watching Jeopardy! everyday.”
He’s affable and funny and seems like he’ll be fun to watch. But only time will tell if that prediction bears fruit.
The neurosurgeon is taking over after TODAY show co-host Savannah Guthrie finished her two weeks at the lectern on Friday.
Sony Executives have said they’re using these guest-hosting stints as audition tapes to find a permanent replacement for Alex Trebek. Trebek, the longtime host of the show died late last year after a battle with pancreatic cancer. Each guest host has paid tribute to the Canadian-born Jeopardy! don in their own way.
There are several more guest hosts to come. You can see the full list here. Good Morning America’s George Stephanopolous and his co-host Robin Roberts will follow Gupta at the lectern. LeVar Burton who has lobbied for the job — along with Stephanopolous — will follow after them as Jeopardy! guest hosts.
Guthrie Raises $200K For Charity As ‘Jeopardy!’ Host
As part of guest-hosting Jeopardy!, each host is asked to choose a charity they would like to highlight. Not only do the hosts get to discuss the charity every day at the top of the show, Jeopardy! matches their contestant’s winnings for the week and donates that to the charity.
“Don’t be sad it’s over, be glad it happened! Thank you, @jeopardy, for the experience of a lifetime! And thank you for donating $217,000 to the @bowerymission,” Guthrie wrote.
It seems a fitting charity, as Alex Trebek and his wife, Jean, were big backers of local Los Angeles homeless shelters.
Gupta will donate the winnings to Odyssey Atlanta, a nonprofit that works with students from under-served neighborhoods in Atlanta to help them reach their goals.
“We are honored that Dr. Sanjay Gupta, renowned neurosurgeon and Atlanta resident, has selected Odyssey as his charity of choice while guest hosting Jeopardy! for two weeks. Contestant winnings will be matched and donated to our organization,” the group posted on its website.
