On Monday afternoon, Jeopardy! posted a sneak peek of tonight’s game board, which includes numerous rock band-related categories.
Tonight, CNN’s chief medical correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta is taking over as the latest guest host. The neurosurgeon’s two-week stint on the game show runs from today until July 9th. Gupta takes the reins from Today show anchor Savannah Guthrie who just finished up her two weeks on Friday.
Looking ahead to Gupta’s debut tonight, Jeopardy! shared an early preview of the episode’s first round. All six categories are rock band-themed, with some famous bands featured. While that doesn’t mean every single clue will be about the band itself, there will be some specific rock band clues. In fact, the first category is exactly that: ROCK BANDS.
That category will likely feature a mixed bag of various rock and roll band trivia. The other five categories are named after famous bands from the ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s. They include Talking Heads, Journey, America, The Cars, and Soundgarden.
There’s a lot of options with those band names. “TALKING HEADS” will likely revolve around famous commentators and reporters. “JOURNEY” could have almost anything to do with travel. “AMERICA” will obviously have something to do with our country, but the possibilities are endless with that one. “THE CARS” will surely test the Jeopardy! contestants’ automobile knowledge. Finally, “SOUND GARDEN” could have something to do with horticulture, or may even be an audio-based category.
“Rock on to this gameboard!” Jeopardy! wrote on Instagram.
‘Jeopardy!’ Gets Shout Out From Legendary Rock Band Grateful Dead
Over the weekend, legendary jam band Grateful Dead must have realized they were recently a clue on Jeopardy! earlier in the week. Their Twitter account shared a picture of the recent clue that referenced one of their classic songs from the ’70s.
On Wednesday night’s episode, the game show shared a clue about the famous San Francisco, California-based band. The rock band is famous for its improvised jams, which made them the forefathers of the jam band genre. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees are well-known for both their music and their merchandise. For decades, it’s been impossible to escape their tie-dyed shirts, skulls, and dancing bears.
The Grateful Dead have had a huge influence on music, but they also know how much of an honor it is to be featured in a Jeopardy! clue as well. The Twitter account of the band made sure to acknowledge the moment on Sunday when they posted the game show’s clue.
“A GRATEFUL DEAD SONG PLAYS FAST & LOOSE WITH THE STORY OF THIS HEROIC TRAIN ENGINEER WHO DIED IN 1900,” the Jeopardy! clue read.
Grateful Dead fans likely knew the song right away. The portion of the clue that mentioned a “TRAIN ENGINEER” is a clear giveaway. “Casey Jones” is a song based on a real-life train conductor by the same name who died on the job in 1900. The track is off 1970’s Workingman’s Dead, the band’s fourth studio album.
“Anyone get this one on @Jeopardy this week?” Grateful Dead tweeted to their fans.
