The Jeopardy! Tournament of Champions is underway. The prestigious tournament kicked off last night with three of the quiz show’s previous winners. As you would expect it was a fierce competition. After all, the contestants are all previous winners. They’re competing for $250,000. So, things are bound to get heated on the iconic stage.
Last night’s Jeopardy! winner, Ryan Bilger, really got into the game. The guy was on a hot streak and he knew it. In the heat of the moment, he couldn’t hold in his passion for the game nor his excitement at scoring correct answers. At one point, he beat his chest. Later, he said that he was, “Going in for the kill,” when wagering on a Daily Double. Because the internet will get mad at just about anything, Jeopardy! fans took to social media to voice their outrage at Bilger’s attitude.
The current Jeopardy! Tournament of Champions semifinalist said he was sorry if his excitement bothered people last night. However, earlier today he returned to Twitter to claim his throne as the internet’s newest villain.
Bilger doesn’t need to worry too much, though. Most of the backlash he got from fans of the show said that he disrespected both his fellow contestants and the spirit of the quiz show. However, all of his fellow contestants have come out in support of Bilger. So, it seems that they didn’t feel like he was out of line for being amped up. As for the show? The official Jeopardy! Twitter account retweeted messages of support for Bilger and even told fans to keep their comments civil. So, it seems that the showrunners aren’t offended by his exuberance either.
Bilger Isn’t The First Jeopardy! Champ To Catch Heat From Fans
Jeopardy! fans have lobbed hate at some of the show’s greatest champions. For instance, many people didn’t like Ken Jennings when he was in the middle of his winning streak. Even when he came on to guest-host, people threw some serious shade at him on Twitter. However, it’s probably more relevant to talk about the current Tournament of Champions host Buzzy Cohen.
Back in 2016, Buzzy told The Wrap that the hate he got was pretty intense during his original run on Jeopardy! He said that one guy on the show’s Facebook page went so far as to wish Crohn’s disease and a car accident on him. This is because they saw him as “smug” and “disrespectful.”
That’s the same heat that Bilger is getting from many Jeopardy! fans. When Buzzy encountered that kind of backlash, he said he would continue to be himself and have fun on the show. Today, he’s hosting the Tournament of Champions. So, it looks like he knows what he’s talking about.
