There is a saying that knowledge is power. For the newest Jeopardy! champion, that power consists of finding security during an uncertain financial time.
Jon Spurney is one of the millions of Americans who are suffering from the many business shutdowns across the nation due to COVID-19. The winner of the March 1 episode of Jeopardy! came ready to play and use this opportunity to help him find stability while he’s been out-of-work for nearly a year.
Spurney works in the entertainment industry. He is a musician and screenwriter who is originally from New York, New York.
Jon Spurney Reacts to Winning Big on ‘Jeopardy!’
During the post-show interview, the winner explains how much his one-day earnings of $37,201 will benefit him.
“I’m shocked, and I’m glad because I’m unemployed,” says Spurney. “If you work in show business production on a lot of things have shut down. I haven’t had any work in the past nine months so this is a total lifesaver for me. It just fell into my lap at the best possible moment.”
He is sure to add “luckily, not Jeopardy!” when speaking about the many entertainment projects that are still shut down.
Sarah Whitcomb Foss of the “Jeopardy! Clue Crew” spoke with Jon after his win.
“We love when knowledge can reward people like you,” she tells him.
To which Jon responds, “If only that would happen more often.”
Guest-Host Mike Richards Congratulates Spurney
The current interim host and executive producer of Jeopardy! Mike Richards congratulates Spurney after his victory and encourages the New York native by telling him he can win more in the upcoming game.
“Congratulations. That’s a huge amount of money,” says Richards. “That $37,000 will go a long way. Hopefully, you’ll get even more.”
Mike Richards took over the guest spot of hosting between Feb. 22 and March 5. He took the stage and replaced one of the previous and best-known winners, Ken Jennings, who’d also been a guest-host for seven weeks.
And of course, all of this comes after the tragic passing of long-time and beloved host Alex Trebek. No matter who the temporary hosts are, the 80-year-old continues to be the face behind Jeopardy! even after he lost his battle with cancer at the beginning of Nov. 2020.
What Was the Question Worth Over $37,000?
The Final Jeopardy! Question was: “In ‘Histoire des Navigations aux Terres Australes’ Charles de Brosses coined the term for the many islands of the region.”
The question was from the “Geographic Regions” category.
Spurney’s two competitors gave the wrong answers. The players were Jillian Zeidner, a legislative analyst from Sacramento, CA, and Michael Colton, a screenwriter originally from Newton, MA. Colton had been the previous winner, racking up a two-day total of $17, 603.
Spurney was the only one to correctly answer with: “What is Polynesia?”
Come on! We have to give the man props just for knowing what the question even meant. I became lost midway through the title. So go on with your bad self, Jon! Good luck during your second round tonight!
