Iconic game show Jeopardy! could never completely replace longtime host Alex Trebek. His place on the program was iconic in countless ways.

However, the show must continue, and that means finding someone that can attempt to fill those shoes. As daunting as a task as that may be, Jeopardy! is going to try.

This is because executive Mike Richards and the staff behind the show are determined. Rather than rushing to a potential replacement, the show is trying out a variety of guests. From TV personality Katie Couric to Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, the iconic game show is surveying their options.

That started with Ken Jennings, who hosted the show for six weeks since Trebek’s death in November. The legendary Jeopardy! champ did well, but the round of guest hosts continue.

Speaking to USA Today, Richards explained the show’s logic:

“Let’s make sure we get someone we are going to feel even better about in a decade than we do this year.”

This is why the show will not set their next permanent host until the filming of its 38th season, which starts in September.

Jeopardy! Isn’t Hosting a ‘Guest Competition’

In the Q&A, Richards went on to explain how the guest-hosting is actually working. He’s adamant that it isn’t really a competition, and more about a love for Jeopardy! and honoring Alex Trebek.

“This is not a host competition,” Richards said. “This is people who love this game, and their respect for Alex is off the charts. That’s how we went about it: Who would feel a connection? Who has the unique talents? Because it’s so hard to host the show, as I can tell you having hosted five series myself. Each person brings their own intense love for the game. Aaron Rodgers loves that game at a visceral level.”

It’s certainly a tough choice. Trebek is certainly irreplaceable, but they can start a new chapter. For Richards and the rest of the show’s staff, that means taking their time.

Although, he did say the guest host could be announced sooner than before next season. It all depends.

“My guess is it’s going to be the end of this season or the summer when we’re going to make that announcement,” Richards said. “That decision hasn’t been made. It’s not like I’ve got the person and I’m just holding them back. We’re legitimately looking at some of these (guest hosts), and some of them are just there for charity and to show their love of the game.”
