John Elway Speaks Out on NFL Kneeling Controversy, Reveals Denver Broncos Plan

John Elway, NFL Hall of Famer and general manager of the Denver Broncos, has spoken out about his team’s plans for kneeling during the national anthem. The 2020 NFL season starts on Thursday night, and the conversation of protests against racial injustice are still prevalent.

Each football team and its players have conducted conversations about a plan of action, and what is best for the team while bringing awareness to important issues. Now the legendary quarterback has shared the Broncos plan going forward for the season.

Speaking to 9Sports, Elway said that he’s held talks with the team about the ongoing matter. He made it clear that he will respect the decisions of everyone on the team – whether they choose to kneel or stand.

“We have talked to team,” Elway said. “Where I stand is where Broncos stand… players can do as they wish… All we ask is everybody respect everybody… If someone wants to stand, respect they want to stand. Somebody wants to kneel, respect the rights.”

Just about every NFL team, at some point, has had differing opinions on the matter, and each has handled the controversial kneeling differently. And some have even changed their stance.

For example, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones previously would not allow his team to take a knee. To date, no Cowboys player has taken a knee during the anthem. However, Jones’ stance has recently changed, and he said his players can kneel if they want to.

In 2016, Colin Kaepernick popularized kneeling during the national anthem as a form of protest against racial injustice. A number of NFL players joined him in kneeling, but many disapproved of the protest.

It remains a potentially divisive topic across the NFL, and many fans have even said they won’t watch NFL games until the players stop kneeling. Reactions on Elway’s kneeling stance are sure to be divided as well.
