Usually, people get married because they love each other. So even during some of the messiest divorces, a lot of that pain is based in a love that once was. So, it’s no surprise that Pilar Pallete had positive things to say about her late husband, John Wayne, even though they ultimately parted ways. The two were married for 27 years before parting ways. Pallete moved out of her home with Wayne six years before his death. However, the two were never legally separated or officially divorced.

Pallete, a Peruvian actress, is currently 92 years old. She’s also the mother of her and Wayne’s three children. They have one son, 59-year-old Ethan Wayne and two daughters, Aissa and Marisa. In the late 1980s Pallete published a book about her marriage to the Duke titled, ‘John Wayne: My Life With the Duke.” During an interview in 1987 after publishing the book, Pallete shared why she wanted to write the story. She said she wanted “to protect his image and to do it for my kids, so they know the real story.” Throughout the book, Palette is honest about some of the Duke’s missteps. However, she also has many pleasant things to say about the actor.

“He was strong, generous, and kind, with lots of sense of humor,” Pallete said during the same interview. “He was fun to be with – everybody wanted to be with him. Plus, he was a fascinating man. Extremely intelligent. He loved to read. He’d devour the newspaper every day and read all the weekly magazines like Time and Newsweek.”

Fans React to Latest Post From John Wayne Estate

The official John Wayne Estate Instagram page shared Pallete’s words. Along with the quote they shared a throwback photo of the couple from years ago.

There is no doubt that John Wayne means a lot to a lot of people. After all, the Duke was an icon and one of the biggest movie stars of his time. His career spanned from the silent era of the 1920s all the way through the Golden Age of Hollywood. He was among the very top box office draws for more than three decades.

Of course, fans loved him to pieces back in the day. But over the years, that love has been passed down to a whole new generation. Fans made that very clear in the comments of the most recent photo from the John Wayne Estate.

“I adore the Duke,” one fan wrote. “My late father’s cowboy!! He passed it on to me!!”

“Never will be another great man and a true patriot of this country,” another user exclaimed.

It should come as no surprise that in 1999, Wayne was selected by the American Film Institute as one of the greatest male stars in all of classic American cinema.
