Justin Timberlake responds to social media demands to “apologize to Britney Spears”

Following the release of the documentary Framing Britney Spears, fans have started the #WeAreSorryBritney hashtag and are calling out many of the celebrities mentioned in the documentary. Justin Timberlake is one of them. Justin and Britney dated from 1999-2002. The documentary claims that after the couple broke-up, Timberlake deliberately painted Britney as a villain who cheated on him. He even released a music video for his song, “Cry Me A River” that featured a blonde woman who closely resembled Britney. The documentary also cites audio from an interview Justin did in 2002 during which he casually shares private details about his and Britney’s sex life. Fans took to social media to voice their frustration. Many asked Justin “So when are you apologizing to Britney?”

Justin Timberlake Responds To Calls For An Apology

Today is the first time Justin is speaking out. Just a few minutes ago, Timberlake released a statement on Instagram. The statement says, “I’ve seen the messages, tags, comments, and concerns and I want to respond. I am deeply sorry for the times in my life where my actions contributed to the problem, where I spoke out of turn, or did not speak up for what was right. And I understand that I fell short in these moments and in many ways others and benefited from a system that condones misogyny and racism. I specifically want to apologize to Britney Spears and Janet Jackson both individually, because I care for and respect these women and I know I failed.”

Justin continues to share that he responded because he knows that the times call for a “larger conversation,” about both misogny and racism in our culture. And he says that he “wholeheartedly” wants to participate in that conversation.

Justin also acknowledged that the music industry is “flawed.” He says that he understands more about his privilege within the industry than he did when he was first starting out. Now that he understands, he said that he never wants to “benefit from others being pulled down again.”

He concludes his post with “I care deeply about the wellbeing of the people I love and have loved. I can do better and I will do better.”

How Are People Responding To Justin’s Apology?

So how are both Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake fans responding to the post? Fans seem to feel that the apology is “a good start.” One fan wrote, “Okay this is a start. Thank you, Justin.” Another fan replied, “We love a first step.” Another commenter wrote, “Very noble first step. Keep going. We fans appreciate the accountability.”

So far, fans seem to appreciate the apology. Britney Spears has not yet responded.
