Comedian and actress Kathy Griffin shared the worrisome news that she has been diagnosed with lung cancer on Aug. 2. Two days later, she shared a post-surgery update with her fans via social media.
In this update, the 60-year-old talked about her health, as well as her battle with addiction. She shared her courageous message on Wednesday, Aug. 4, via her Twitter account. She began her update by sharing her feelings about her surgery.
“To be honest, this cancer surgery was a little more than I had anticipated,” Kathy Griffin said.
She then shared details about how she is managing the pain she is feeling following her surgery. Instead of using narcotics to manage her pain, the comedian is relying on a familiar product.
“Tonight will be my first night without any narcotic painkillers,” Griffin also wrote. “Hello Tylenol, my new best friend!”
Avoiding narcotic painkillers is important for Griffin because, according to her tweet, she has abused them in the past. That abuse had very serious consequences.
“The last time I was in the hospital was in June 2020 when I tried to take my life and overdosed on prescription pills,” Kathy Griffin shared.
Since her suicide attempt, the actress has learned to live without narcotics.
“With over a year clean and drug free, I now know I can do this and anything I want without those devil pills,” she also said.
She then offered her perspective on the seriousness of her cancer compared to the seriousness of addiction.
“Y’know what? I fear drugs and addiction more than I fear cancer. So, I think I’ll be ok,” Kathy Griffin also said.
Kathy Griffin Shares Details About Lung Cancer Diagnosis and Surgery
In her post announcing that she has lung cancer, Kathy Griffin said that the surgery which is part of her cancer battle would involve removing part of her left lung. While most people typically associate lung cancer with smoking, Griffin, who has had controversial moments during her career, said she had “never smoked.”
Fortunately, Griffin’s prognosis is a pretty good one.
“The doctors are very optimistic as it is stage one and contained to my left lung,” Kathy Griffin shared earlier this week. “Hopefully, no chemo or radiation after this and I should have normal function with my breathing. I should be up and running around as usual in a month or less.”
She also shared her optimism in her previous tweet, saying, “…but I’m gonna be just fine.”
Since Kathy Griffin shared the news of her cancer diagnosis, her fans and some of her famous friends have shared their well-wishes with her. One of those famous faces was former “NCIS” actress Pauley Perrette.
