“American Idol” winner and daytime talk show host, Kelly Clarkson, has officially parted ways with her ex-husband, Brandon Blackstock.
According to reports from TMZ, the 39-year-old singer and mom of two reportedly asked the judge presiding over divorce from Blackstock to approve her separation officially.
Per the legal documents filed by Laura Wasser, Kelly Clarkson’s divorce attorney, she also asked that the remainder of the divorce process, including matters of finances, be dealt with later.
Although Clarkson is ready to move on, it seems like Blackstock has taken issue with it. Reports from TMZ also revealed that the validity of their prenuptial agreement is in question as Blackstock is currently contesting it. However, the judge has not yet decided on the matter.
Since the couple split, their divorce process has been lengthy and contentious. Both parties have come forward with multiple allegations against one another. However, they did agree on a plan for the custody of their two young children.
Previously, the judge granted “The Voice” coach primary physical custody of their children temporarily. Clarkson can expect the custody order to become permanent at a later date. The custody arrangement worked in Clarkson’s favor since Blackstock moved from Los Angeles to Montana.
Kelly Clarkson’s Lengthy Divorce Battle
After the custody ruling, Blackstock fired back when he filed more legal documents in which he is now seeking $436,000-a-month in support payments from Clarkson.
Additionally, TMZ reports that he’s also asking for $301,000 in spousal support and $135,000 in child support. He is also requesting that Clarkson pay the $2 million in legal fees.
As for Blackstock, the judge has also awarded him temporary spousal support. Since the couple married in 2014, the financial support would only last for half of the time they were married. As a result, his spousal support is also likely to become permanent, though it would end in 2023.
Moreso, Blackstock’s soon-to-be ex-wife has also accused Blackstock of defrauding her out of millions. Previously, Blackstock worked as Clarkson’s manager while they were together. Upon looking into their finances amid their divorce, Clarkson is now accusing him of taking “exorbitant” fees for his management.
Kelly Clarkson alleges that her former husband of seven years did not have the proper license to be managing her. Now, she is demanding to be paid back all the money she paid him during his 13 years as her manager.
Even though Clarkson will have to provide Blackstock with financial relief, the separation has been good for Clarkson. During an interview with Entertainment Tonight, she revealed that she’s penned “like 60 songs” in the wake of her divorce. “It is an insane amount of getting it out,” she explained. “I think that’s a blessing in itself.”
She also added that “it’s such an awesome thing to have that outlet, regardless of whether people hear it or not.”
