Classic TV fans are always on the hunt for their favorite shows. Some might wonder where they can stream “Kojak” that starred Telly Savalas.

As of this writing, only the full second season is available on Amazon Prime. You also can go on there and watch the series’ first episode, but that’s it.

“Kojak” saw Savalas play Lt. Theo Kojak of the New York City Police Department for five seasons. There were some particular things that made that character stand out. Firstly, Kojak is pretty much sucking on lollipops all the time. Secondly, Savalas’s bald head appeared to make Kojak look even tougher. Finally, having Kojak deal with all types of criminals in 1970s New York City gave the crime drama some true depth and even darkness at times.

The show ran on CBS between 1973-78, but Savalas’s character placed itself in the memories of classic TV fans forever.

‘Kojak’ Returned For Seven TV Movies After Series Was Cancelled

Who co-starred alongside Savalas on “Kojak” for its five-season run? Dan Frazer played Capt. Frank McNeil, Kojak’s boss. Kevin Dobson played Det. Bobby Crocker, who was Kojak’s protege’. George Savalas, Telly’s brother, played Det. Demosthenes “Curly” Stavros.

In 1985, Savalas returned to play his well-known character in seven “Kojak” TV movies. Theo got a promotion to captain for these movies. Andre Braugher, best-known these days for his work on “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” played Det. Winston Blake alongside Savalas. Dobson did return for one TV movie, this time in his new role as an assistant district attorney.

Savalas had quite a career as he worked in films and television. Among some of his movie credits are “The Dirty Dozen,” “Kelly’s Heroes,” “Birdman of Alcatraz,” “The Greatest Story Ever Told,” and “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.”

As for his TV work, Savalas appeared in shows like “The Untouchables,” “Ben Casey,” “77 Sunset Strip,” “The Twilight Zone,” “The Fugitive,” and “Run for Your Life.” Savalas died from cancer on Jan. 22, 1994, at 72 years old.

Savalas Used Catchphrase Throughout Show And It Caught On Fire

We mentioned earlier about Savalas sucking on lollipops throughout his run on “Kojak.” OK, what was his famous catchphrase used about as much as his suckers?

Four words. “Who loves ya, baby?” would be uttered by Lt. Kojak at different times throughout the series. But it became so connected with Savalas that if he showed up on another show, there’d usually be some prompt for him to say it.

Catchphrases connected with TV characters are nothing new. Consider “I Love Lucy” as it had a catchphrase. What would Desi Arnaz [Ricky Ricardo] say to Lucille Ball [Lucy Ricardo] after hearing of another scheme gone wrong? “Lucy, you got some ‘splainin’ to do.”

But “Kojak” aired on CBS at a time when detective shows were all the rage. Savalas just cemented himself in TV lore with an iconic character.

Not to mention an iconic catchphrase, too.
