“Last Man Standing” is nearing its conclusion. And Fox drove that point home by announcing Thursday that it will air the one-hour series finale on Thursday, May 20.

Star Tim Allen wrote the last episode. Its title is “Keep on Truckin’.”

The cast and crew are keeping their lips sealed about the plot details of that final show. But according to TV Line, former “Last Man Standing” regular Eve (Kaitlyn Dever) will return for the episode.

‘Last Man Standing’ Jumped from ABC to Fox

The first six seasons of “Last Man Standing” aired on ABC. In 2017, the network canceled the show, provoking an uproar from fans.

In 2018, Fox picked up the show and revived it. Allen said there are no major differences between working for Fox and working for ABC, other than the size of the respective networks. And he said there were no hard feelings about ABC cancelling his show.

“I was shocked when we got canned when we did because we weren’t finished,” he told Entertainment Weekly in 2018. “I want this to be a success because Fox took a shot on us, and the Fox network is a smaller and more aggressive group than ABC and Disney.”

In October of 2020, Fox announced that the ninth season of “Last Man Standing” would be its final one. The show’s Season 9 premiere ratings had dropped sharply from its earlier average, per TV Line.

“I’ve been one lucky dude to have been part of ‘Last Man Standing,’” Allen said after the announcement. “I so appreciate the incredible support from our fans over this near decade of work. As we approach the ninth season, I just admire and feel grateful for all the hard work our wonderful cast and crew have done. We had all considered to end the show after last season, but together with Fox, we decided to add a year so we could produce a full season to create the gentle and fun goodbye. I’m looking forward to a memorable and hilarious final season.”

Tim Allen’s Take on Outsiders

Speaking to EW, Allen delved into the beliefs of his character on the show, Mike Baxter, and people like Baxter who love the outdoors. Baxter runs marketing for a chain of hunting and sporting goods stores.

“Outdoor people seem like they’re not environmentalists but they’re actually the most environmental — they want the outdoors to stay exactly the same so they can go and hunt things,” Allen said. “It’s practical.”

The cast of “Last Man Standing” can certainly count plenty of outsiders among its fans, who will no doubt be watching the bittersweet series finale closely.
