Law & Order: SVU star Mariska Hargitay just posted a fun photo with her former co-stars, Andy Karl and his wife, Orfeh. Karl played Seargent Mike Dodds on the show, while Orfeh guest-starred in 2020 as Toni Sparks in the episode She Paints for Vengeance.
Andy Karl only played Mike Dodds on Law & Order: SVU for a year, but he made quite an impact. A serial killer shot and killed Dodds on his last day, and Mariska Hargitay’s character, Olivia Benson, never fully forgave herself. Because of Mike Dodds’ death, Benson handles domestic violence cases differently.
Hargitay Is Currently Working on Season 23 of ‘Law & Order: SVU’
Mariska Hargitay and the rest of the current SVU cast are back to work for the 23rd season. Hargitay has beaten out the record for the longest an actor has played a character on Television. She surpassed a record previously held by Gunsmoke actors James Arness and Milburn Stone as well as Kelsey Grammer for his role as Frasier Crane.
But thankfully for fans, breaking the record wasn’t Hargitay’s end goal. Hargitay has shown total dedication, at least for now. And thanks to a three-year renewal, fans know that we’ll have at least two more seasons before it’s time to say goodbye to the long-running show.
In fact, not even a broken ankle can keep Hargitay away. The actress broke her ankle running home from the premiere of Marvel’s Black Widow. She’s working the set of Law & Order: SVU with crutches and a boot.
The Actress Initially Had an Interest in Comedy
Shockingly, Hargitay initially wanted to pursue comedic work. When NBC offered her the role of Olivia Benson, her manager voiced concern. But Hargitay just knew that the role felt right.
“I was like ‘This is it!’” Hargitay told Parade Magazine in a 2019 interview. “My manager was worried because it was very dark and not up my alley, because I liked comedy. And I was like, ‘This is right up my alley.’ Never in my life had something been more known to me.”
Hargitay immediately clicked with former co-star Chris Meloni in auditions, and ultimately had an instant interest in the part. It’s clearly suited her well because it takes a lot of dedication to play the same character for 23 years.
You can catch Law & Order: SVU and its spinoff series, Law & Order: Organized Crime, which stars Chris Meloni as Elliot Stabler, on Thursday, September 23rd on NBC.
The two shows were initially going to be joined by a new spinoff, Law & Order: For the Defense, but the show was scrapped by NBC before making it to air. But for fans, that should be this time. It gives producers more time to focus on Benson, Stabler, and the characters people already know and love.
