Remember that letter Chris Meloni’s Elliot Stabler handed Mariska Hargitay’s Olivia Benson during Season 1 of “Law & Order: Organized Crime”? How could one forget? It very well may hold the long-anticipated confession of love that the more romantic “SVU” fans have wanted to see for the past 20 years. In reality, there’s no way of knowing the contents of the envelope. But that isn’t stopping fans from giving it their best guess online.
With some prodding from the official “Law & Order” Twitter account, everyone and their mother is wondering “#WhatsInTheLetter.”
The anticipation is at an all-time high. Why? Good question. “Law & Order: Organized Crime” star Chris Meloni is responsible for the madness. During his appearance at the 92nd Street Y in New York recently, the Elliot Stabler actor caused a stir by confirming the letter’s significance in the early portion of Season 2. Not only that, but he added something that isn’t helping anyone’s anxiety.
“The letter is addressed this season and I think [fans are] going to set [their] heads on fire when it happens. I think there’s going to be a riot,” said Meloni, per TV Line.
Uh… so hopefully, no one sets their head on fire. But do you see what we mean? Saying there’s going to be a riot is not helping the fans’ dilemma.
“i would like to know will i pass away once i know what’s in said letter ? if so i’ll be forwarding my funeral bills to y’all via email x,” one Twitter user joked.
Fans have taken to the practice of putting the love letter emoji in their Twitter handles. This one below even went so far as to include the full hashtag.
‘Law & Order: Organized Crime’ Star Chris Meloni Has More Than Made Up For His Abrupt Departure from ‘SVU’
Naturally, fans were sad when Chris Meloni made the decision to take a hiatus from “Law & Order: SVU” back in 2011. We’d be lying if we said we didn’t want to see how his character’s dynamic with Olivia Benson ran its course.
Now, however, 10 years removed from his departure, the letter may very well represent the fulfillment of the relationship between the former partners. Fans are just excited that they get more Elliot Stabler action, honestly. The cross-over stuff with “SVU” and Mariska Hargitay is just a bonus.
Yet Meloni talked about how his abrupt departure from his former show left things a little incomplete.
“There’s a certain amount of familiarity because ‘SVU’ has been on for so long,” Meloni told Stage Right Secrets. “Then I think there is a sense of being something being unresolved of how I left the SVU franchise.”
