The relationships on Law & Order: SVU is without a doubt one of the best things about the show. It’s why many of us keep coming back for more.
It’s probably fair to say that longtime fans of Law & Order: SVU have mixed feelings when it comes to the relationship between Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) and Elliot Stabler (Christopher Meloni). The writers of the show have teased viewers for years on end now that Benson and Stabler might actually become a couple. But all the while, there was another budding romance in the making.
That would be the romance between detective Amanda Rollins and former detective Sonny Carisi. Rollins, played by actress Kelli Giddish, made her SVU debut back in the Season 13 premiere. As for co-star Sonny Carisi (Peter Scanavino), he joined the cast in a full-time role the following year. Since that time, it’s been hard to deny the connection they have. Not only that, but the finale episode of Season 22 gave fans reason to rejoice. And the Season 23 premiere all but confirmed that Rollins and Carisi are officially a thing.
Back in April, Scanavino discussed his character’s relationship with Rollins during an interview with TV Insider.
“What do Rollins and Carisi’s interactions say about where their relationship is?” Distractify asked the actor. “Because they had that awkward moment before she got the call about her dad.”
“It’s a complicated relationship,” Scanavino admitted. “I think there’s something there between the two of them. But it’s one of those instances where you’ve had your relationship defined by work and being friends for so long that sometimes it might be hard to cross over into something else and that might not even be what’s right.”
Scanavino goes on to talk about how the lines of their relationship were “blurred” for quite some time. They walked a thin line between being friends and being something more.
“Sometimes the lines between what’s a platonic or romantic affection can be blurred and that might be there,” he said. “But I think it’s very clear that they can really depend on each other when they’re really in a pinch. That’s a very special thing to have, particularly in the world that they exist in, which is one where work is always pressing. There’s always something happening.”
Kelli Giddish Admits ‘It’s So Strange’ for Her Character to be Romantic with Carisi on ‘Law & Order: SVU’
There’s no denying that fans of the show have been wanting to see Rollins and Carisi end up in a serious relationship. And now that it’s come to fruition, the Law & Order: SVU actress told Smashing Interviews Magazine it’s strange for them.
“It’s just so strange for us to be romantic on the show,” Giddish said. “But I think we both realize how much it means to the fans and how much it means to our characters. It seems so organic and so right that we’re willing to go for it even though we’re very good friends in real life.”
