Are you a fan of Law & Order: SVU? Chances are you are if you’re reading this article. So, what are your thoughts on detective Amanda Rollins?

Before we dive in too far, let’s just say that most fans of the show seem to be split on this topic. But there is a growing portion who find Rollins character to be “insensitive.” That feeling was highlighted by loyal fans of the show who were discussing it on Reddit. A user who goes by the name u/ramrez97 said they “cannot stand” Rollins.

“I’m not sure if this is an unpopular opinion or not, but I cannot stand Rollings,” the original post states. “She has no empathy at all for any victims. As a detective in SVU, I feel like she regularly vilifies and judges victims for the circumstances of their attacks. Especially sex workers. She just really makes my blood boil.”

For those who may not know, Kelli Giddish is the woman who plays Detective Rollins on Law & Order: SVU (Special Victims Unit).

Fans Have Their Own Opinions About ‘Law & Order: SVU’ Character Amanda Rollins

Meanwhile, the post, which went online on Thursday night, attracted the opinions of several other Law & Order: SVU fans. Among them was one fan in particular who called Rollins a “polarizing character.”

“Lol, this is a pretty popular opinion about her. She’s an extremely polarizing character. She’s capable of going either way. Sometimes atrocious, sometimes compelling.”

They go on to say that Rollins may just be an accurate representation of the way some authority figures treat victims. So, at times it may be difficult to watch, but it’s a perspective that needs to be shared.

“I think she’s fairly representative of how victims CAN be treated by authorities. The shaming, victim-blaming, lack of compassion. It’s a reality and her behavior is pretty accurate.”

The original poster commented back, admitting that Rollins’ “realistic” portrayal of an insensitive authority figure on Law & Order: SVU makes sense.

“You’re definitely right that she is more realistic to what the reality of a lot of cops are and how they treat victims. I just hate watching her.”

Another fan of the hit show came in with a different idea. They believe that Rollins character is the way she is because it needs to balance out Mariska Hargitay’s Olivia Benson character. She is as compassionate and understanding as they come.

“I don’t particularly love her but I don’t mind her being on the show. I don’t think the show would work as well if all characters were Olivias.”

The original poster once again agreed with that assessment.

“You’re definitely right that there needs to be somebody to balance Olivia, but Rollins just goes too far to the other end of the spectrum for me.”
