‘Law & Order: SVU’ Fans Call Out the Show For Recycling Actors

by Joe Rutland

When it comes to recycling actors, fans of “Law & Order: SVU” aren’t on the same page as they discuss this activity on the NBC hit show.

A Reddit thread focusing on “Law & Order: SVU” bringing back actors after they’ve appeared gets deep on this topic.

Redditor Ill_Clue_791 started the thread with this comment.

“I know this subject has been addressed on here before but it is one of my few complaints with SVU,” the writer said. The Redditor asks why SVU uses some of the same actors for more than one character.

‘Law & Order: SVU’ Used Actor Peter Jacobson Five Years Apart In Episodes

The Redditor pointed out Peter Jacobson played Bart Ganzel in 2020. In 2017, Jacobson played lawyer Randy Dworkin.

“I realize both Rollins and Carisi had one episode guest roles before they were hired for permanent characters,” the writer said. “And I sort of get that but don’t understand why they keep reusing bit actors,”

Commentor skieurope12 wrote, “Compared to LA, there are far fewer actors in NYC, and far fewer TV shows for them to work on. TBH, it’s not a big deal for me.”

Then another user chimed in, too. “The actor who played ganzels lawyer was a UC in a different episode as well,” the writer said. Talking about “Law & Order: SVU” again, the writer said, “I don’t think it’s a big deal. They obviously find people that they can work with, etc., and use them. Keeps people working.”

Reddit Commentor Pointed Out There Are Just Only So Many Actors Willing To Do TV

CurlyDolphin said, “There is only so many actors that are willing to do TV shows, are in the area, and available for work.”

The writer said this has happened on other shows, too. The writer also says if they have a few seasons apart, and it’s a lesser-known actor, then it doesn’t bother CurlyDolphin.

Another Redditor, seanfar5, wrote, “The ones they reuse are usually excellent, years apart, and in a procedural show. I actually love it. You have to know the lore to even notice.”

Redditor bluelightsonblkgirls said, “There aren’t ‘thousands of actors’ in nyc like LA.” The writer also points out the LO universe is known for this and it is part of LO lore.

“Law & Order: SVU” will return this fall on NBC. Mariska Hargitay returns as Oliva Benson and Ice-T returns as “Fin.” The show’s part of Dick Wolf’s “Law & Order” franchise. “Law & Order: Organized Crime” starring Christopher Meloni will follow “Law & Order: SVU” on Thursday nights. It’s coming off of a successful first season where Meloni reprises his role as Eliot Stabler. Fans already know Benson and Stabler have worked together before when Meloni was on “SVU.”
