“Law & Order: SVU” is one show that does a good job of keeping storylines tight and complete. But there’s one around Olivia Benson out there.
Let’s see if we can put some light on this one. According to an article on Pajiba, Benson, played by Mariska Hargitay, was given a baby during a Season 11 episode called “Savior.”
The “Law & Order: SVU” team is working on a case where some demented soul is leaving prayer cards on the murdered bodies of sex workers. They’re able to find one woman who survived an attack. Now she’s pregnant but they get her to testify.
‘Law & Order: SVU’ Episode Finds Olivia Getting Child From Mother
Near the episode’s end, she gives birth to a child and gives it to Benson. The young woman leaves the baby in Benson’s care and is gone. “Savior” ends with Olivia at the hospital being asked to make a decision on the child’s care.
What’s interesting about this situation is this baby is never talked about again on “Law & Order: SVU.” There’s been a lot of talk from Benson about becoming a mother. But all of that took place after this episode…and there is no mention of this part of Olivia’s life.
Imagine being a consistent viewer of this NBC crime drama over the many seasons it’s been on the air. Imagine hearing so much chatter about Benson and motherhood. Then this one moment where she was a guardian of a baby born prematurely is not mentioned again.
Benson Doesn’t Bring Up This Situation at All When Talking About Motherhood
That does not sound like a solid storyline finish which “Law & Order: SVU” does pretty well. One can guess why this doesn’t come up when Benson talks about being a mother. Yet the fact that she, even for a brief moment, was a “mother” to a child is worth noting.
Maybe there’s an Outsider reading this who recalls another time where Olivia talked about one time where she was a guardian. It’ll be interesting to see if the show ever brings this matter up again.
What Outsiders can expect is another season of “Law & Order: SVU” starting up again this fall. Just like last season, it will be the lead-in show for “Law & Order: Organized Crime.” That show had its premiere season with Benson’s old partner Eliot Stabler [Christopher Meloni] returning to the franchise.
Meloni had left his role on “SVU” and spent time away doing other projects. But fans still remembered him from the shows he worked on with Hargitay. They also recalled the magic, if you will, that happened between both actors on the screen. Whether or not there’s any crossover action happening this season is up to anyone’s guess.
