There’s no doubt that Law & Order: SVU (Special Victims Unit) is one of the most popular shows in television history. A large part of that is thanks to lead actress Mariska Hargitay.

Mariska Hargitay is without a doubt one of the most beloved actresses in the entire television industry. She has risen to fame thanks to her popular role in Law & Order: SVU. Hargitay plays the character of Olivia Benson, the commanding officer of the Manhattan Special Victims Unit. Before taking over, Benson worked as a detective with the unit with her partner of twelve years, Elliot Stabler (played by Christopher Meloni).

As one of the most popular shows on all of television, it goes without saying that Law & Order: SVU has won and been nominated for countless awards. But how many Emmy’s has the star of the show, Mariska Hargitay, won for herself?

The answer to that question may surprise you. Mariska Hargitay has only actually won one Emmy award. Despite being nominated for an award many times, she was finally able to win it back in 2006 for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series.

‘Law & Order: SVU’ Star Has Won Numerous Other Awards

Mariska Hargitay, of course, has also won several other awards in addition to her one Emmy. Among them are a Golden Globe in the category for Best Actress in a Television Drama in 2005, and a Gracie Allen Award for Outstanding Female Lead in a Drama Series in 2009.

“It’s gratifying to play such a complex character,” Hargitay told the Television Academy. “Olivia is not only an accomplished, street-smart cop, she’s also an empathetic woman who can respond emotionally to victims of terrible crimes without compromising her professionalism.”

If you are an avid watcher of shows on NBC in addition to Law & Order: SVU, then perhaps you may know Hargitay for some of her other characters. In the 1997-98 season of top-rated ER, had had a recurring role as Dr. Greene’s (Anthony Edwards) girlfriend Cynthia Hooper. She even starred in the NBC drama Prince Street. In addition to those, Hargitay had guest roles on shows like Seinfeld, Ellen, Thirtysomething, and Hotel Room.

Meanwhile, the Law & Order: SVU actress doesn’t just play the part on television. She also used her platform to create the Joyful Heart Foundation. The organization’s mission is to heal, educate, and empower survivors of domestic violence, child abuse, and sexual assault. As a matter of fact, Hargitay even testified before Congress at one point to encourage lawmakers to address the backlog of untested rape kits in the United States. In doing so, she started the website endthebacklog.org. It’s the first-ever website dedicated solely to this issue.
