However, there are a few other roles the actress takes very seriously in addition to her “Law and Order” character; the roles of wife to her husband and fellow actor, Peter Hermann, and as a mother to the couple’s three children: August, Amaya, and Andrew.
While these roles are ones the “Law and Order: SVU” embraces, life can certainly get busy. And even an accomplished actress like Hargitay has to work on balancing each area of her life.
From one-on-one time with her husband to time for herself, Hargitay makes sure that she finds time for these moments in her very busy schedule.
This balancing act can sometimes be difficult to schedule, however. Sometimes, a little get-away is easy to plan. Other times, it’s the couple simply making time to see a movie every few weeks.
“We sit there in the movie theater before the movie starts and say, ‘Wow! We’re at the movies without kids!’ about 50 times to each other,” the “Law and Order: SVU” actress told Good Housekeeping in 2012.
Hargitay went on to joke that these date nights with her husband can sometimes look weird to the other moviegoers. Especially if they don’t have children.
“People look at us like we’re weird,” the “Law and Order: SVU” actress joked.
Hargitay added that it isn’t hard to pinpoint the other parents in the room noting that if the people are parents, they’re likely “doing the same thing.”
While the roles of wife and mother are important ones for Hargitay, so is finding time for herself.
“I try to give myself a little bit of time every day to sit quietly,” she explained. “I end up in the bathtub as often as I can — that’s a real sanctuary for me.”
A Match Made On “Law and Order: SVU”
When Mariska Hargitay met her husband, Peter Hermann on the set of “Law and Order: SVU,” the actress knew he was something special.
After Mariska Hargitay and Peter Hermann dated for about a year, the couple took the leap and wed in 2004.
Two years later, the couple welcomed their first child into the world; a son named August Miklos Friedrich.
A few years later, the “Law and Order” actress and her husband decided their happy family needed another little addition. The couple began preparing to welcome another baby into their lives; this time via adoption.
“We just had so much love to give,” Hargitay said of her and Peter’s decision to add to their little family.
“August wanted siblings,” the actress continued. “Peter and I both envisioned this big family because we both come from that.”
In 2011, the couple adopted their daughter, Amaya Josephine. Not long after welcoming Amaya into the world, Mariska and Peter’s adoption lawyer notified the couple of another baby ready to be adopted; their youngest son, Andrew.
