‘Law & Order: SVU’: Mariska Hargitay Detailed Dick Wolf’s Harsh Reaction to Her Having a Bad Hair Day

Let’s be honest with ourselves for a second here — we have all had a day or two with a bad hair day, right? If so, you aren’t alone. One Law & Order: SVU actress knows all about that.

It turns out that even some of the biggest stars on television have bad hair days every once in a while as well. Take Law and Order: SVU (Special Victims Unit) actress Mariska Hargitay for example. Even the woman behind Captain Oliva Benson has a few past hairstyles that she wishes she could have back. As a matter of fact, one of her haircuts was so bad that the show’s creator and executive producer, Dick Wolf, jokingly threatened to fire her.

Hargitay talked about that and more in a terrific interview with TV Insider back in 2018.

“Like any woman, Olivia is trying to find the hairstyle that fits her life. I stand behind all my hairdos, except maybe three,” Hargitay laughed.

So, getting to the exchange with her producer, Dick Wolf. That all started when Hargitay went to get a haircut after one of the show’s shoots. Take it from the star actress herself — don’t let your hairdresser drink while they are on the job.

“After one shoot, the hairdresser, who was French, wanted to trim my hair. So he’s drinking wine and cutting and when I looked up from my magazine I just went, ‘This is not good.’”

Shortly after that, Wolf approached her with, well, a pretty harsh reaction to her new look.

“Dick told me he was going to fire me,” she continued. “I cried so hard, like, ‘You’re blaming me?’ It went on for two weeks, then he said, ‘There’s no crying in television.’ And we just moved past it.”

‘Law & Order: SVU’ Star One of the Most Successful Female Actresses of All-Time

Is it too soon to call Mariska Hargitay one of the best actresses ever? Maybe — but either way, she’s definitely one of the most successful. After all, the 57-year-old star has been the main character on Law & Order: SVU since 1999. And after the premiere of the show’s 21st season in September of 2019, it officially became the longest-running primetime U.S. live-action series in all of television history. That sounds pretty good, right? It’s also the only live-action primetime series that debuted in the 1990s and is still producing new episodes to this very day.

As for Mariska Hargitay herself, well, she has only received 91 different award nominations in her career, winning 33 of them. In 2006, she became the first regular cast member on any of the Law & Order series to win an Emmy Award. She won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series.

It’s probably pretty safe to say that those three bad haircuts in Hargitay’s life aren’t holding back the SVU star too much.
