Mariska Hargitay may be the ultimate fan-favorite on “Law & Order: SVU,” but she can’t solve these sexually oriented crimes all on her own.
As one of the most popular of the “Law & Order” spin-offs, “Law & Order: SVU” has been on for 22 seasons and counting. Since the very beginning, Mariska Hargitay has portrayed Olivia Benson. Her character grew with her — from Detective to Sergeant to Lieutenant to now Captain.
No one else has been on the show since season one up until now except for Hargitay. However, Ice-T is pretty close. He became a series regular during the second season of the crime drama.
Ice-T and Mariska Hargitay
Ice-T plays Sergeant “Fin” Tutuola, but people on set know him as the “Philosopher King.” He has a way of being an absolute breath of fresh air on set.
“He goes on his philosopher rants and everyone gathers around because the way he breaks everything down is clear and simple. He takes all the complex and whiny stuff out of it, like, ‘Here’s the deal.’ And in 19 years, I’ve never seen him in a bad mood or raise his voice,” Mariska Hargitay said in an interview with TV Insider from 2018.
After so much time together, the “Law & Order: SVU” duo have grown quite close. It’s made over 20 years feel like no time at all.
“I think the best thing about our show is that everybody on our show that we work with is so wonderful. It’s easy. You know, I love Mariska, we get along. Just the work environment, it’s so fun. So, it doesn’t seem like 20 years, it just seems like you’re going to work and doing something you love to do,” Ice-T said on “Late Night with Seth Meyers” in 2018.
Ice-T on ‘Law & Order: SVU’
Although he has been on the show for nearly two decades, Ice-T still has other career interests. He has been on two reality series, “Ice Loves Coco” and “Ice & Coco,” both of which didn’t last very long. He also released two songs in 2019, “Feds in My Rearview” and “I’m Too Old for This Dumb S—.”
Ice-T didn’t start out as an actor, but slowly got more enveloped in the acting world. He started out in movies before landing his two-decade-long gig as Fin.
“I think authenticity is something Dick Wolf really loves. He loves true crime … the closer he can cast to the truth is very important. When I met him, he vibed off my honesty and my intensity. I was getting into acting, I had done a ton of movies, but I was still getting my skill together…” Ice-T said in an episode of “The Law & Order: SVU Podcast.”
He also revealed that he doesn’t take acting classes, but instead picks up skills and advice from all the amazing actors he’s worked with.
