Law & Order: SVU returns for the show’s 23rd season on Sept. 23. And the two-part premiere promises to test Capt. Olivia Benson.

A synopsis for the premiere episode says she’ll butt heads with Deputy Chief Christian Garland over a case.

“As the investigation into a sex-for-housing scheme expands, Benson’s loyalty to Garland is tested,” it says. “Rollins and Carisi try to keep their witnesses on board when a powerful congressman is identified as a suspect.”

The show hasn’t divulged much of what fans can expect this season. And the trailer is light on new details. All of the shots come from previous episodes of Law & Order: SVU and Organized Crime.

Though, someone leaked two major plot points ahead of the premiere. Namely, that producers planned to write off Garland and SVU junior detective Kat Tamin from the show during the two-part premiere.

Jamie Gray Hyder, who plays Tamin, confirmed the Deadline report. She added that the decision was made “above (her) pay grade.” Demore Barnes, who plays Garland, didn’t publicly comment on the report.

Two characters joined the show in Season 21 and were fan favorites. Fans weren’t happy about the news

“The squad is short-staffed as it is and now Kat is leaving? She didn’t even get the chance to get promoted to detective, and they just got here,” one fan posted. “I certainly didn’t see it coming for these two. They seemed like they were having fun on and off camera. Such a shame.”

Showrunners haven’t said why the characters won’t be returning. Fans will have to turn in on Sept. 23 to find out for themselves.

Is ‘Law & Order’ Teasing Benson, Stabler Romance?

Fans had a lot of things to say about the joint Law & Order: SVU and Law & Order: Organized Crime trailer. But they most wanted to talk about that ending. Why are former partners Olivia Benson and Elliot Stabler holding hands?

Fans “shipped” Mariska Hargitay’s Benson and Stabler during Christopher Meloni’s entire run on the show. He left after season 12. His character was a married man in the show, so their relationship always stayed strictly professional. But Benson’s wife died when he returned to the Law & Order universe, leaving open the possibility that fans would get their dream pairing.

And producers of the show are aware of the chemistry between the two. Meloni even pointed out their connection was undeniable.

“It’s undefinable, but you know it when you feel it,” Meloni told TV Insider about the characters’ chemistry. “For me personally, one of its main cornerstones is humor.”

One thing fans pointed out was that the trailer didn’t have any footage from this season. Leading many to believe the show was hiding something big but were tipping their hand with the hand-holding footage.

While we don’t know what will happen, it adds another thing to Law & Order: SVU‘s already packed plate for next season.
