The season 22 finale of Law & Order: SVU aired last night, and carried with it some major moments for the leading characters. While there weren’t too many stressful moments for our characters in the finale (relatively speaking,) one character’s fate is definitely in jeopardy.

Officer Garland may lose his job.

In the finale, Garland gets deposed for the Jayvon Brown case. Brown was falsely accused of sexual assault and eventually sued the NYPD. His deposition, where he speaks out against racism, lands Garland in big trouble with Chief McGrath.

Chief McGrath also gets on Garland’s case about a rising amount of sexual assault cases. Garland argues that it’s because more people are comfortable coming forward. McGrath won’t hear it, however, and comes at garland for his supposed personal faults. McGrath yells at Garland for his ego, along with his lack of discipline, leadership, and competence.

Garland told Benson at the wedding that he had to take some time off to “do some tests.” This is bad news considering there was a point in the finale where Garland is seen clutching his chest. His retired father also told him that someone might try to force him out of his job, but Garland isn’t going quietly.

Whatever happens next won’t even begin to get addressed until next fall, so until then, fans have to wait to see the fate of Garland. It looks like Garland’s already messy situation is about to get a lot messier. Season 23 of Law & Order: SVU will air this fall.

‘Law & Order: SVU’ among a Growing Franchise

The Law & Order franchise is growing. While Law & Order: Organized Crime just hit the market, finishing its first season last night, NBC has ordered another Law & Order series, Law & Order: For the Defense. The new show will follow the other side of the criminal justice system and take a look at a team of defense lawyers.

Executive producer and creator of the Law & Order franchise Dick Wolf is excited about the opportunity to do something different within the Law & Order universe.

“This new show is exciting for me personally,” he told The Hollywood Reporter. “We spent the last 30 years on shows that played offense. Now it will be great to play defense.”

Dick Wolf has been a major Hollywood producer and creator behind many shows. His success with the Law & Order franchise makes him one of the most famous show creators around.

So Law & Order: SVU fans don’t just have a new season to look forward to, but a whole new show. Hopefully, in season 23, Garland will land back on his feet.
