Law & Order: SVU‘s official Twitter account just shared a clip from the season premiere where Benson takes on a politician. The tense moment comes after Benson’s recent investigation into a sex trafficking ring leads all the way up to Congressman Howard, who they arrest at a fundraising party.

In the scene, Benson is talking to Howard and his lawyer. During a powerful moment, Benson confronts Howard when he says “I’m not going to prison. I’m going to be president.”

“I’ve seen a lot of powerful men in this position and they all thought they could commit crimes with impunity,” she says. But it upsets him even further and he begins threatening Benson and Carisi.

In a surprise end to the scene, Howard and his Lawyer leave the room. Then, his lawyer actually slaps him in the face.

The ‘Law & Order: SVU’ Season Premiere Was the #1 Most-Watched Show on Thursday Night

Law & Order: SVU came back with a bang, championing over ratings heavyweights like Big Brother and The Masked Singer to make it Thursday night’s most-watched program. This is even though it was an extra hour longer than usual. Deadline reports that Law & Order: SVU got a sold 5.5 million viewers.

Law & Order: Organized Crime did see a bit of a drop-off. It came in as the 3rd most-watched show of the night with 4.32 million viewers.

The Season Premiere Said Goodbye to Two Characters

In a saddening turn of events, the season 23 premiere said goodbye to two fan-favorite characters people were hoping to see more of: Kat and Garland. When Kat actress Jamie Gray Hyder confirmed her departure from the show earlier this month, she noted that this was not her decision and that it was “above her paygrade.”

Thankfully, neither of the characters was killed off in the season premiere. Both got to walk away from the force with their lives very much still intact.

The season 23 premiere of Law & Order: SVU also had some more lighthearted moments. After the wedding, where Carisi and Rollins finally kiss, the two seem pretty inseparable in the premiere.

And of course, many fans have wondered how the show would address the real-life leg injury Olivia Benson actress Mariska Hargitay obtained earlier this year. They address it right away, showing Benson getting driven off the road and breaking her foot. When she’s carried away from paramedics, she thinks she sees Stabler for a moment. The two were on the phone when Benson crashed.

If you want to see what happens next on Law & Order: SVU, you can tune in every Thursday night on NBC. The episodes will return to being one hour long, so Law & Order: Organized Crime starring Elliot stabler actor Chris Meloni will air shortly after.
